Researcher: Development and management of environmental, hydro-geological and meteo-climatic databases to assess the suitability of production systems based on vegetation species adapted to arid and saline soils in coastal marginal lands via EURAXESS

Istituto di Geoscienze e Georisorse - Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche

Padova, Italy 🇮🇹

Offer Description

The Mediterranean region is exposed to severe environmental pressures caused by climate change, population growth, intensive agriculture, and desertification. Reduced freshwater availability and loss of productive agricultural land are major challenges for the future. The research aims to demonstrate the environmental and potential of Neglected and Underutilized Species (NUS), which require low water and are adapted to arid and saline soils in order to convert marginal lands into productive areas, improving soil quality. In particular, the research will develop and manage databases of environmental, hydro-geological and meteorological-climatic parameters. These will be used to develop suitability maps to evaluate the scalability and transferability of NUS production systems in the coastal Mediterranean regions in order to increase the resilience of ecosystem and reverse land degradation.
