Summary

The Water, Wetlands, and Coastal Science Branch within the BCS Science and Insights Division seeks a motivated “Senior Scientist” to provide advanced technical, scientific, and analytical support for programs in coastal science, engineering, and climate change adaptation.

About the role

In this role, you will contribute to and lead research efforts to understand coastal and estuarine system responses under various climate change scenarios and explore adaptation strategies to reduce risk. You will also engage in erosion and inundation modelling, risk and exposure assessments, catchment hydrology, and hydrodynamic modelling, using numerical modelling tools, GIS platforms, and programming languages.

About You

As a “Senior Scientist”, you will be part of a supportive and high performing team. You will be committed to working collaboratively with a geographically dispersed project team to deliver customer-focused results from technical or scientific projects and to consistently deliver high quality data and advice.

You will:

  • Drive strategic coastal science priorities: Shape and influence the direction of scientific efforts within the branch.
  • Provide expert advice: Deliver clear, high-quality advice to stakeholders on project outcomes and findings related to coastal and climate change topics.
  • Collaborate effectively: Work closely with geographically dispersed teams to achieve customer-focused results and foster knowledge sharing.
  • Manage data and knowledge: Ensure proper data handling and seamless knowledge transfer within the organisation.
  • Prepare high-quality documentation: Develop technical reports, project management plans, research publications, briefing notes, and responses to requests.
  • Present complex concepts: Create and deliver presentations that convey technical information clearly to diverse audiences.

Essential requirements:

  • Relevant science degree qualification.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in leading and delivering coastal science and engineering projects, including modelling coastal and estuarine processes, as well as conducting risk and exposure assessments.
  • Strong expertise in GIS, programming, and numerical modelling of hydrodynamics, erosion, inundation, and climate scenarios.
  • A strong track record of publications in top-tier journals and presentations at high-profile conferences.
  • Knowledge of catchment hydrology, flood modelling and assessment, and NARCLiM2.0 climate projections is advantageous.
