Recruitment/Posting TitleAssistant Professor in Human-Environment Interactions
DepartmentSAS – Geography
SalaryCommensurate With Experience
Posting SummaryThe Department of Geography at Rutgers University invites applicants for a human geography, tenure track position at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning Fall 2025.

We seek a candidate whose teaching and research interests focus on human-environment interactions, and environmental change within global, international, and East Asian contexts. Broad topical areas of interest include environmental politics and governance, approaches to biodiversity and climate change, food and energy systems, water security, and urban environmental change. We welcome applications from researchers that combine qualitative and quantitative methods, and that integrate geographic information systems or other emerging geographical research methods into critical and empirical investigations.

The candidate will be expected to teach introductory as well as advanced courses in environmental, political, or urban geography that foreground the relationship between human and environmental systems, and which will contribute to our Geography, Environmental Studies, and International and Global Studies curricula.

We will give preference to a candidate who can help diversify our faculty or draw a more diverse student body to our discipline through the substance of their research and teaching. Interest in innovative pedagogies, civic engagement and activism, or community outreach would be an added benefit.

Rutgers University offers a strong, dynamic, and diverse intellectual community with multiple interdisciplinary centers connected to the study of environmental issues in international and East Asian contexts, including the Global Asias Initiative, Center for Chinese Studies, Rutgers Climate and Energy Institute, and Rutgers Global. Rutgers is located in New Jersey, a demographically diverse state. Our student body reflects this racial and ethnic diversity. Rutgers Geography, founded in 1949, has fifteen core and seventeen additional graduate faculty. The department is built on a tradition of critical spatial analysis across the discipline’s subfields and draws from decades of collaboration with area studies and other interdisciplinary units on campus.
