The Murray-Darling Basin Authority (MDBA) is an independent government agency which, in partnership with Basin governments, manages the Murray–Darling Basin’s water resources in the national interest. With the enactment of the Water Act 2007, the MDBA was established as an independent expertise-based statutory agency.

The MDBA aims to achieve a healthy working Basin for the benefit of all Australians. The Murray–Darling Basin contains a rich diversity of natural environments that are unique in Australia and the world. The Basin is also crucial to Australia’s economy and home to 2.3 million Australians, including people from over 40 First Nations. How we manage the Basin as a whole connected system, manage our water carefully, and protect it for future generations is set out in the Murray-Darling Basin Plan. 

We are seeking an EL1 Assistant Director to join the Assets team in River Management. This opportunity for movement at level.

Our ideal candidate is up for a challenge, experienced in relationship management, embraces colliding perspectives, and is comfortable with uncertainty. You must be willing to travel to reach the river on a regular basis.

In addition, this is an exciting opportunity to work on a project seeking to resolve the sediment challenge within the Barmah Millewa reach of the River Murray, who will work with First Nations, and stakeholders in this important part of the river system.  

The Position

The Assistant Director Environmental Assets will support leadership and coordination of the development and delivery of strategic projects, investigations, monitoring, budgets and work plans, with a focus on the Barmah Millewa reach. This is a challenging role that requires the ability to work with a range of stakeholder, consultants and contractors to coordinate the plans and support the delivery of a range of evolving deliverables in the complex reach of the river system.

The Assistant Director Environmental Assets will work closely with the Assets team, other parts of the River Management Portfolio and the Murray‐Darling Basin Authority, other agencies of the Australian Government, the Basin States and Territories and wider stakeholders.

The position involves interstate travel including overnight to regional areas. The successful candidate is required to have and maintain a current driver’s licence and be willing to undertake driving duties to regional locations.

Your key responsibilities in this role are to:  

  • Provide leadership for, and support delivery of, project(s) within the Barmah Millewa reach of the River Murray.
  • Provide support for the program oversight, governance and assurance of the planning, design, delivery and operation of water infrastructure projects for assets such as Fishways, river works, pumps, pipelines, embankments, and environmental regulators.
  • Ensure the development and critical review of business cases and asset designs to ensure asset investments meet required levels of service and outcomes, while also ensuring appropriate technical standards are applied and value to the community is realised.
  • Provide governance and assurance of asset creation and modification projects, ensuring that implementation reflects contemporary asset management principles and standards.
  • Acknowledge, understand, and manage risk effectively for the River Murray Operations Assets through execution of risk management processes and procedures.
  • Establish and maintain collaborative and effective partnerships with key external stakeholders, such as State Agencies, to ensure business objectives are met.
  • Assist in the preparation and documentation of decision‐making processes and demonstrate effective prioritisation of investment based on anticipated impacts to Levels of Service.
  • Represent River Management Portfolio and or Assets on committees/taskforces,.
  • Assist the team and portfolio with other duties as required.
  • Undertake urgent or high priority tasks, including acting in other River Management positions as required.
