Job Summary

The selected candidate will be expected to teach our EAS 687 – Landscape Planning studio to MLA graduate students during the 2025 Winter semester.  Class convenes Mon., Wed., and Fri. from 9a -11:40a, and is taught in the third floor Landscape Architecture studios located in the Dana Building on the campus of the University of Michigan.  
 

EAS 687 “Landscape Planning” is a four-credit course that concentrates on the theory and method of modeling the ecological, climatic, hydrological, and social systems of landscape. Specifically, it focuses on utilizing computing tools to conduct quantitative spatial analysis of landscape factors including land cover, topography, socioeconomics, hydrology, etc. It acquaints students with knowledge and skills of how spatial information can be collected, analyzed, and then combined to generate maps and models that allow stakeholders, planners and design professionals to both investigate and generate land planning alternatives. 

The objectives of the course are:

  • Develop critical thinking, design, and technical skills needed to excel at modeling for landscape planning and analysis projects across a variety of spatial scales.
  • Apply the available software tools, coding skills, and ecosystem models to analyze landscape systems.
  • Master data collection and fusion techniques to collect and process data from different platforms, in different formats and spatial scales.  
  • Be able to employ landscape data analysis and modeling techniques to diagnose specific issues at the watershed scale.  
  • Develop evidence-based innovative planning and management solutions to the real world landscape problems.

Responsibilities*

  • Lead the design and delivery of the Landscape Planning studio course in landscape architecture.
  • Develop course syllabi, assignments, readings, and projects that reflect contemporary issues and practices in the field.
  • Provide individual and group instruction in Landscape Planning methods, and techniques.
  • Encourage critical thinking and creative problem-solving through project-based learning.
  • Assess and evaluate student work with constructive feedback to advance their design and technical skills.
  • Coordinate with other faculty members to ensure a cohesive and comprehensive foundation for the program’s curriculum.
  • Participate in reviews, critiques, and juries for student work.

This course enrolls approximately 25 students and is supported by 1 0.25 Graduate Student Instructor (i.e., 10 hours of support/week/semester). This position requires in-person teaching, remote instruction will not be available. The expected percentage of effort for this course is 33%.
 

Required Qualifications*

  • A professional degree in Landscape Architecture (MLA or equivalent).
  • Professional practice experience in landscape architecture with a focus on ecological design/planning.
  • Familiarity with GIS and other tools used in planning and design at the landscape scale.
  • Excellent verbal, visual, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to engage with students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Commitment to fostering a collaborative, inclusive, and innovative studio culture.
     

Modes of Work
