Purpose 

The CEEW’s sustainable water programme informs policy-making for the sustainable development of water resources and their effective management through research in areas of circular economy in used water management and water bodies rejuvenation; capacity building for mainstreaming climate action in water; sustainable development through policy coherence in food, land, and water systems; and water accounting-based planning.

For its Sustainable Water programme, CEEW seeks to hire a research analyst (RA) with good exposure to hydrological modeling, remote sensing (RS), and geographic information systems (GIS) for water resources. An ideal candidate should be able to demonstrate an excellent grasp of surface water and/or groundwater modeling softwares, hydrological concepts, and statistics and coding to support water risk assessments. Also, the candidate should possess a sound understanding of the policy landscape of the water and climate sectors, have strong skills in data analysis and research writing, and support the organisation in extending its network with the government and non-government stakeholders in the Indian states.

Job Duties and Accountabilities  

  • Undertake RS and GIS-based computation of datasets, risk assessments, and analysis.
  • Undertake qualitative and quantitative research, such as review of literature, primary research, and statistical analysis.
  • Identify, download, and process the right datasets for modeling water resources
  • Lead the running of modeling software(s).
  • Quickly learn new modeling software(s) and techniques as required.
  • Support in the preparation of research reports.
  • Support in publishing in leading peer-reviewed journals and generate other knowledge. products for different audiences, such as blogs, policy briefs, op-eds, etc., at regular intervals.
  • Establish and manage relationships with project counterparts from CEEW’s partners.

Project assistance  

  • Assist senior researchers in the team in conceptualising new projects and developing high-impact research proposals.
  • Contribute to the development of cross-team research proposals and undertake such research studies.
  • Assist with project and programme implementation, including preparing presentations, factsheets, and other communication materials.
  • Assist effective outreach of research outputs through coordination with the outreach team, and engagement with a broader network of stakeholders, and concerned policymakers.
  • Participate in relevant conferences, workshops, and training programmes for a comprehensive understanding of developments relevant to hydrology and climate risk assessments.
  • As required, assist senior team members in important meetings and sessions by preparing notes and conducting follow-ups.
  • Participate in weekly team meetings and assist with preparing minutes and chairing the weekly meetings.
  • Any other assistance that may be required

Selection criteria  

Qualification and work experience:  

  • Master’s degree in hydrological modeling, or hydrology, or environmental studies, or water resources with a major focus on GIS and modeling, with
  • A minimum of one year of experience working on risk assessments or modeling of water resources.
  • Proficiency in statistical and quantitative analysis using STATA, R Studio, or Python.

Key skills:

  • Excellent in GIS, RS, and hydrological modeling
  • Good awareness of governance and policy landscape of the climate and water sector so as to be able to support interdisciplinary research
  • Strong research skills to support quantitative and qualitative data analysis.
  • Good writing skills to support report and other content writing
  • Ability to use MS Office application suite.
  • Good presentation skills are essential for effective, efficient, and adaptive verbal and written communication.
