AMA seeks to hire a Scientist to support the NASA Earth Action Water Resources Applications Area within NASA’s Earth Science Division (ESD).

AMA seeks to hire a Scientist to support the NASA Earth Action Water Resources Applications Area within NASA’s Earth Science Division (ESD). The objective of NASA’s Water Resources program is to enhance water management practices by leveraging advancements in Earth observations, technology, and science to provide practical solutions. This is a full-time position located onsite in Hampton, Virginia or remotely from the US East Coast, as part of the Research, Science, and Engineering Services (RSES) contract.

The scientist will aid NASA’s Earth Action (EA) Program by managing tasks related to the Water Resources Applications Area (WR). This includes overseeing, coordinating, planning, monitoring, and executing WR’s program elements. The individual will coordinate activities among WR, EA, ESD, and SMD to facilitate the utilization of NASA data and Earth observations by water resource agencies, organizations, and users. They will participate in national and international conferences and meetings and engage in SMD, ESD, interagency, and international coordination efforts as required. Additionally, they will provide leadership and management for a portfolio of water resource projects and program activities, mentor NASA WR program interns, support development and review of solicitations for applied research proposals and serve as a lead on water resource management topics in internal and interagency working groups, committees, and initiatives.

The ideal candidate should possess a background in water cycle science, water resource management, Earth science, and/or applied environmental science, coupled with strong scientific/technical writing and communication abilities. Candidates with proven experience in fostering relationships with water management organizations in the U.S. government, state governments, tribal organizations, and non-profits will be given preference. 

Required Qualifications:

  • MS and 3 years’ experience or equivalent in a scientific discipline within Earth science preferably hydrological sciences, environmental engineering, environmental public health, and/or a relevant water-related field.
  • Experience in facilitating discussion, engaging user communities, and enhancing mutual understanding and partnerships among scientists, data users, policy makers, and the public, as well as other stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated expertise in various aspects of water cycle science, Earth science, and remote sensing, including precipitation, soil moisture, freshwater and marine water quality indicators, ground/surface water, and snow water equivalent.
  • Familiarity with NASA Earth observing satellite missions.
  • Awareness of NASA Applied Sciences/Earth Action program.
  • Proven experience in interagency and interorganizational collaboration.
  • Ability to effectively balance independent work, coordination, collaboration, and teamwork.
  • Excellent communication skills (written/oral/listening/presentation) across scientific, administrative/executive, and public audiences.
  • Ability to routinely travel for program specific events, project or partner-led events, domestic and international conferences. 

Telework is only available for individuals who are physically located on the U.S. East Coast.
