Offer Description
This position is part of the HETMAR project (PID2023-148543OA-I0), recently awarded by the Spanish Research Agency. HETMAR aims to improve the understanding of Contaminants of Emerging Concerns (CEC) fate in porous media by incorporating a combination of statistical and stochastic tools. This involves evaluating the effect of geochemical heterogeneity and considering CECs as a mixture of organic compounds with a heterogeneous distribution of both sorption and degradation properties, as well as an uncertain initial concentration distribution. HETMAR will lead to significant advances in understanding the fate of CECs in subsoil, particularly within a Managed Aquifer Recharge framework.
The PhD position involves research combining field-scale experiments with deterministic and stochastic modeling. The successful candidate will conduct fieldwork at a pilot-scale Managed Aquifer Recharge facility, collecting geochemical data through continuous monitoring of redox potential, alongside traditional monitoring at designated observation points. This data will then be processed using geochemical modeling, incorporating geostatistical and stochastic tools. The PhD will be supervised by Dr. Paula Rodriguez-Escales and Prof. Xavier Sanchez-Vila. We offer a four-year contract, starting in the first quarter of 2025, with opportunities for research stays abroad. The salary will increase progressively each year from the first to the fourth.
The ideal candidate will possess skills in experimental work, data science and modeling. The work will be developed in the Hydrogeology Research Group at the UPC-CSIC (Barcelona, Spain) (https://h2ogeo.upc.edu/). To apply to this position, the candidate should send a CV and a motivation letter to phdcandidates.ghs@gmail.com.
