Job Description

Environmental Scientist I, II, III (Water Resources Modeler)
Your role in this position will involve assisting in planning for Utah’s future water needs in the Hydrology and Modeling section. Your contribution and responsibilities will be determined by your experience and the hiring rank, which may include, but are not limited to, supporting water resource planning studies, building and maintaining surface water models, hydrologic modeling, Great Salt Lake modeling,   state water budgeting, developing water demand models for municipal, industrial and agricultural water users, flood inundation studies, and creating custom programs to interact with databases for modeling, analysis and data visualization. 

The incumbent will:

  • Help plan and guide the decisions made about Utah water resource by developing and maintaining hydrologic and river operations models
  • Support the modeling and planning team for the Great Salt Lake Integrated Plan
  • Support the Office of the Great Salt Lake Commissioner
  • Use and receive training in engineering software such as RiverWare, GoldSim, ArcGIS Pro, HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS, VIC, RAPID, Earth Engine, and Google Cloud Platform.
  • Conduct hydrologic studies, build models, and document their results
  • Use and design databases to read data, store results, manipulate data and visualize the data
  • Use GIS to support modeling, studies, planning and decision making
  • Ensure accurate information is being presented to the public and decision-makers by timely analysis and collecting the most up-to-date data 
  • Develop scripts and programs to solve or analyze problems
  • Coordinate and consult with Division staff, other state, local and federal agencies, and the public
  • Help achieve Division goals by assisting other sections as needed

The Ideal Candidate

  • The best-qualified candidates will possess several or all of the listed skills. An ability to solve problems using logic to identify key facts, explore alternatives, make recommendations, and propose quality solutions; analyze or identify underlying principles, reasons, or facts associated with information or data to draw conclusions
  • Knowledge of principles, theories, and practices of civil engineering
  • Some surface water modeling experience (RiverWare, GoldSim, HecRAS, etc.)
  • General GIS knowledge
  • Some programming experience using Visual Basic, Visual C#, Python, R, GoldSim, FORTRAN, or VBA
  • Some knowledge of database management methodologies, database maintenance, design, and queries (SQL Server, Access, SQLite) 
  • An ability to use State or agency-specific software application program(s) and provide technical assistance to users
  • Communicate information and ideas clearly and concisely, in writing; read and understand information presented in writing
  • Ability to read, interpret, and apply laws, rules, regulations, policies, and/or procedures
  • Patience and willingness to work cooperatively towards common objectives; work with people in a manner that shows sensitivity, tact, and professionalism
  • An ability to schedule and organize project tasks in a logical sequence

Typical Qualifications:

  • Working knowledge of the principles, theories, and practices of hydrology and hydraulics.
