Job Description | The University of Notre Dame seeks to appoint a postdoctoral scholar in WASH, Poverty, and Health to support a multi-year project on Innovative Solutions to Interlinked Water Insecurity, Poverty, and Poor Health in Africa’s Urban Slums, sponsored by the Notre Dame Poverty Initiative. The Project’s long-term goal is to understand how poverty interacts with water insecurity to exacerbate health disparities in slums and develop interventions to address these intertwined challenges. The postdoctoral scholar will be advised by an interdisciplinary team of PIs, namely Kyle Bibby (Environmental Engineering), Ellis Adams (Geography and Environmental Policy), Liz Wood (Global Health), Mat Sisk (GIS), and Santosh Kumar (Developmental Economics). Candidates should be available to travel to Malawi for fieldwork. The initial appointment will be for one year with the possibility for renewal subject to performance and funding availability.The ideal candidate will have a strong mixed methods background and experience developing, conducting, and analyzing surveys and interviews. Preferred candidates will have some familiarity with GIS and randomized control trials and have field research experience in sub-Saharan Africa. This position will report to Notre Dame’s Poverty Initiative, The Keough School of Global Affairs, and the Eck Institute for Global Health.ResponsibilitiesThe postdoctoral fellow will lead efforts to collect quantitative and qualitative data on household poverty and water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) experiences in Malawi. They willDevelop survey instruments and interview and focus group protocolsLead/coordinate survey data collection in MalawiLead/coordinate qualitative data collection in MalawiCollect spatial data and work with research team to generate risk mapsFacilitate research meetings with collaborators in MalawiPerform other research-related duties required for the project, including data analysis and manuscript writing for peer-reviewed publications. Minimum Qualifications | PhD in Public Health, Public Policy, Health Sciences, Applied micro-economics/Health Economics, Geography/Spatial Sciences, Political Science, Sociology, Environmental Social Science, Environmental Sciences and Engineering, Natural Resources Management, Urban Planning, or a related field by the start date.Experience with various types of qualitative and quantitative data collection methods in areas around WASH research |
