Politecnico di Milano

Milan, Italy 🇮🇹

The Environmental Intelligence for Global Change Lab at Politecnico di Milano invites applications for 1 PhD position for  3 years  starting in February/March 2025 under the new PhD Programme in Science, Technology, and Policy for Sustainable Change (STEP-CHANGE)

This position is funded by RSE S.p.A – Ricerca sul Sistema Energetico, and focuses on the dynamic optimization of regional multienergy systems in response to evolving challenges in the energy sector. The project seeks to move beyond traditional static optimization models, incorporating uncertainties in energy demand, technological advancements, and climate change impacts, to develop flexible and adaptive strategies for energy planning and management.

The research activity will involve:

– Developing and validating a dynamic multienergy planning framework at the regional scale, integrating multiple, often conflicting, objectives.

– Incorporating socio-economical, technological and climatic uncertainties in the optimization framework to enhance the robustness of energy systems.

– Collaborating closely with RSE S.p.A. in Milan, where technical and methodological tools for optimization, reinforcement learning, and energy system simulators will be employed.

Qualifications for this position include an MSc degree in Automation, Civil, Environmental or Energy Engineering, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, or related fields.
