About the job  

The Senior Scientist – Water Science is responsible for managing scientific projects and investigation services to produce fit-for-purpose water, aligning with corporate objectives.

This role involves identifying and implementing research to enhance water quality, including reuse and recycling opportunities, developing project scopes, methodologies, timelines, and budgets, and supervising research execution. The Scientist consolidates findings and communicates them within SA Water and the broader industry.

They will also provide guidance and coaching to junior staff, plan and supervise scientific investigations, deliver consultancies to generate revenue, and offer expert advice on water quality and treatment. Additionally, they aim to enhance SA Water’s scientific services and elevate its scientific profile through publications and conference presentations. 

This max term opportunity is available until 30 June 2025. 

About Science and Strategy

The Science and Strategy group employs scientific approaches to address present and upcoming challenges. They execute a strategy driven by customer preferences to elevate the SA Water brand and position us for future success.

In addition, your responsibilities will include: 

Fostering trust with our people, customers and community by providing expert advice and service that ensure we effectively communicate and engage audiences with our business strategy and its delivery across South Australia, every day. 

You will: 

  • Identify scientific research that delivers fit for purpose water from a range of source waters including opportunities for reuse and recycling.
  • Supervise the execution of research projects.
  • Consolidate research findings, communicate across SA Water and the broader scientific and water industry.
  • Provide guidance and coaching to students, SA Water graduates and junior staff.
  • Plan and supervise the execution of laboratory and pilot based scientific investigations with outcomes that improve the efficiency and effectiveness of integrated water treatment processes that support operational outcomes.
  • Extend scientific reputation of SA Water by publication of papers and presentations at conferences.

Your success in this role will come from: 

  • Degree in Science, with major in a relevant discipline.
  • Post graduate qualifications – desirable.
  • Demonstrated ability to process information using business software and then communicate it effectively graphically, verbally and in technical reports/publications.
  • Demonstrated skills in the design and implementation of research experiments.
  • Demonstrated ability to work productively within multi-disciplinary teams and provide scientific project management and supervision.
  • Extensive knowledge of water and water treatment chemistry and processes.
  • Knowledge of wastewater treatment chemistry and processes – desirable.
