Objectives: To investigate the application of two-dimensional (2D) materials as electrocatalysts in the degradation of organic compounds during electrochemical water purification processes.

DC6 will synthesize high-performance 2D nanomaterials using advanced synthesis techniques including atomic layer deposition (ALD), to engineer TMDs and MXenes-based catalysts with tailored properties that maximize their catalytic potential in electrochemical water purification. Chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and chemical-mechanical polishing will be used to produce micro-textured and mirror-polished BDD electrodes. DC6 will characterize the synthesized 2D nanomaterials using XRD, AFM, SEM, AES, FTIR, micro-Raman, EDX, and XPS analyses to gain a profound understanding of the morphology, composition, and surface properties of the synthesized 2D materials.DC6 also evaluate and validate of electrochemical performance: By undertaking a comprehensive electrochemical and degradation analysis to assess the synthesized materials’ performance, focusing on catalytic activity, stability, and charge transfer kinetics, with the aim of validating their potential for effective water purification.

Expected results: Optimized synthesis of TMD and MXene nanomaterials yielding enhanced electrocatalytic efficiency for the degradation of organic compounds in water purification.

Planned secondments:

  • UT (Sup.: I. Zekker ): M20-23 (4 months): Assessing the anammox efficiency improvement for pollutant degradation.
  • NORG (Sup.: S. Shaposhnikov): M29-31 (3 months): Training in cytotoxicity assessment of nanoparticles.
