Job Description

Job Title:  Engineer II

Job Description:
The candidate will collaborate with river commissioners and regional staff to create water right distribution models for the state. The candidate will assist water users and staff in understanding distribution accounting models. The employee will work with the data and automation teams to determine new measurement locations to meet modeling needs.

Principal Duties:

  • Creating visual schematics, accounting schematics, and priority schedules using information from commissioners, regional engineers, and distribution engineers. 
  • Identifying where new measurements need to go based on schematics and priority schedules. 
  • Identifying locations where there is measurement but we do not have access. 
  • Making new models based on established practices for simple river systems. 
  • Take over the development and maintenance of less complex models. 
  • Teach users how to operate and read models.

Ideal Candidate:

  • Excellent written communication skills. 
  • Ability to verbally communicate complex ideas to stakeholders. 
  • Listen and comprehend concerns expressed by stakeholders. 
  • Ability to use technical skills to analyze water right systems and develop solutions. 
  • Experience in hydrology, groundwater flow, and hydraulics.

Qualifications

  • Understanding of principals of hydrology, water measurement, and water use estimating techniques.
  • Experience using spreadsheets to evaluate complex or large data sets. 
  • Experience in computer programming. 
  • Ability to read, interpret, and apply laws, rules, regulations, policies and/or procedures. 
  • Speaks clearly, concisely and effectively; listen to, and understand, information and ideas as presented verbally. 
  • Communicates information and ideas clearly, and concisely, in writing; reads and understands information presented in writing. 
  • Must have passed Fundamentals of Engineering exam.

Supplemental Information

  • Typically, the employee may sit comfortably to perform the work; however, there may be some walking; standing; bending; carrying light items; driving an automobile, riding a horse and hiking in rough terrain and high elevations.
  • Preference will be given to candidates with Water Rights experience.
  • Incumbent must be have a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in the state of Utah.
  • Must be able to work in extreme and adverse weather conditions (heat, wind, snow, ice, rain, etc. Lift and carry up to 45 lbs as needed. Drive 4-wheel drive vehicles and/or OHV’s. Hike carrying equipment. Hike and/or walk over rough terrain and wet or rocky surfaces. Statewide travel with overnight stays which could occasionally last up to 4 nights in duration. Work alone/independently. Must be able to communicate effectively in English both verbally and in writing. Must be able to ride a horse for hours at a time in rugged terrain
