The UFZ
The Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) with its 1,100 employees has gained an excellent reputation as an international competence centre for environmental sciences. We are part of the largest scientific organisation in Germany, the Helmholtz association. Our mission: Our research seeks to find a balance between social development and the long-term protection of our natural resources.
The job
We are seeking a talented and motivated PhD Researcher (f/m/x) in physical lake modelling in order to analyse the potential ecological impacts of hydrothermal use of lakes and reservoirs.
Your tasks
In a large coordinated project, new ways of thermal use of surface waters are explored by using next generation heat pumps. As part of this project also ecological impacts on lakes are to be evaluated and information is required about the potential heat that can be extracted from German standing waters. The main tasks of this project position include: a.) Generating a national inventory of standing waters (lakes and reservoirs); b.) Application of 1D physical lake models to explore thermal dynamics and their modifications by hydrothermal use; c.) Evaluate ecological impacts on lakes including potential future climatic changes; d.) Framing rules how to determine allowable heat extractions in cooperation with the project team and e.) Quantification of a nationwide hydrothermal usage potential from standing waters.
