Although IGRAC is known for its global overviews and maps, groundwater is often assessed and monitored at national or even aquifer level. For this reason, the new IGRAC website, currently under development, will also include country profiles. These pages will serve to give a brief overview of the groundwater situation in a country. What climate zones are found there? What is the hydrogeology like? What percentage of water withdrawal comes from underground resources? And what is the status of their monitoring network? These questions, and others, will be answered on the country profiles. Similarly, we want to create aquifer profiles, where information is made available at aquifer level.
Objective
The objective of this internship will primarily be to produce country profiles. In addition, the intern can also start the production of some aquifer profiles for aquifers with sufficient information available.
Methodology
The country profiles, as well as the aquifer profiles, will gather different sources of data and information. The internship will, therefore, include a big desk research component. As intern, you will work in close collaboration with one of IGRAC’s Senior Groundwater Specialist to define the order in which the countries will be added to the overview and to select reliable sources of information. Meanwhile, our Senior Communications Officer will assist you throughout the writing and data visualisation process.
Prerequisite
The ideal candidate is a groundwater enthusiast, enrolled in a BSc or MSc in the field of Hydrogeology (or similar) at a university within the European Union. With this background you will be perfectly equipped to find and interpret the difference sources of groundwater information. Moreover, you should have a good command of the English language and, preferably, an affinity for writing and content creation.
Duration
The duration of this internship will be 2-3 months and you would ideally start in November 2024.
