Job Summary:

West Texas A&M University (WTAMU), a member of The Texas A&M University System, invites applications for the position of Assistant/Associate/Professor of Plant Science – Agricultural Water Management. This is an 11-month, tenure track position that reports to the Head of the Department of Agricultural Sciences. WTAMU is seeking an innovative and dynamic educator and scientist to contribute to a nationally recognized teaching and research program focused on improved productivity and sustainability of agricultural production systems in semi-arid, limited irrigation regions. WTAMU is a four-year academic institution with more than 9,000 students serving the Texas Panhandle and beyond. The geographic region is noted for its integrated crop-livestock agriculture and related agri-business. The Department of Agricultural Sciences has over 1,100 students and offers B.S., M.S, M.Ag. and Ph.D. degrees.

Work Performed: 

  • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in area of expertise using face-to-face and/or online formats
  • Develop a dynamic research program with areas of research that may include integrated dryland crop/livestock systems, plant breeding, plant physiology, plant pathology, crop and water management, soil residue/health management, or related disciplines
  • Develop cropping systems/management practices for productive and regenerative agricultural systems in water-limited environments
  • Develop management strategies to sustain and regenerate soil and water resources
  • Recruit, advise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students
  • Actively participate in departmental, university, scientific community, and industry service activities
  • Develop strong crop, water management, forage, and livestock industry relationships in the region/state
  • Work collaboratively with WTAMU faculty and faculty groups, other agencies, universities, and constituents in the crop, water management, and livestock industry to support regional teaching, research and service needs

Necessary Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Plant/Soil Science, Environmental Science, or closely related field with emphasis in regenerative dryland production systems
  • Working knowledge and experience in crop water productivity, dryland agronomic practices and management, deficit irrigation, water management, soil moisture sensor technology, and soil/residue management
  • Working knowledge of groundwater resources and trends in the Ogallala Aquifer region
  • Demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching, research, and service
  • Academic or industry experience beyond the Ph.D. is preferred
  • Commitment to an interdisciplinary team approach to education and research
  • Desire and ability to establish working relationships with external constituents in the crops and livestock industry
  • Leadership skills, effective communication, self-motivation, and performance in a student-centered environment are expected
