We invite applications for one fully funded, full-time, 3-year PhD position in the context of an MSCA-DN (101120560) project titled: Dryland Agriculture and Land Use; Past, Present and Future Resilience (AGRI-DRY). The student will be enrolled at Università del Salento (Lecce, Italy) and will receive a PhD degree in Sciences for Cultural Heritage.
The successful candidate will be based at the Laboratory of Archaeobotany and Paleoecology (LAP) of Department of Cultural Heritage at Università del Salento. The general project intends to develop an interdisciplinary approach to traditional cultivation through the recognition of the complementary value of cultural heritage and sustainability. The development of human culture is strongly correlated with the development of agriculture and an important role is now recognized for the traditional knowledge of local communities in the management of ecosystems and in the sustainable use of resources, especially considering climate change. Thie candidate of this specific PhD project will be:
- analyze the state of the art of the application of stable isotopes in archaeobotany;
- investigate compositional variations in archaeobotanical assemblages and evaluate the relationship between cereals and weeds;
- correlate functional ecological relationships derived from weed analyzes with those derived from stable isotope analyzes in crop plants;
- distinguish the signals related to soil fertility and the water needs of cultivated plants.

- Knowledge of archaeobotanical methodologies.

In addition, candidates must comply the specific MSCA requirements:
- Applicants must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of the recruiting beneficiary (host institution) for more than 12 months in the 36 months immediately before their recruitment date.
- Applicants must be doctoral candidates, i.e. not already in possession of a doctoral degree at the date of the recruitment.

Benefits
The selected candidates will be employed under a fixed-term, full-time contract at Università del Salento, with a gross monthly value of approximately €3.311,60 (for candidates without family obligations) and, in addition, Euro 660.00 gross per month (for candidates with family obligations). The estimated gross salary is calculated based on European Union requirements and adjusted according to specific country factors. Final salary adjustments are subject to the policies of the local institution. The successful candidates will also have access to funding for conference participation.
A good command of English is mandatory. While knowledge of Italian is not a requirement, the successful candidate will be encouraged to acquire at least minimal competence in this language to participate in locally organized events.
The successful candidate will have a working space at the Department of Cultural Heritage (Via D. Birago, 64), in a shared office with other members of the group or PhD student.
Eligibility criteria
The candidate must also possess the following specific requirements necessary to access the selection, provided for by the rules relating to the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Program (MSCA) of the European Union within which the project is financed AGRI-DRY: – Non have achieved the PhD degree; – not having resided or carried out one’s main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Italy for more than 12 months in the three-year period immediately preceding the date of recruitment, understood as the date of signature of the check contract (so-called mobility rule), unless it is a servant mandatory national status or a procedure for obtaining refugee status under the Geneva Convention.
The application for participation must be accompanied by the following documentation:
1. photocopy of a valid identification document, with date and handwritten signature of the candidate and photocopy of the tax code;
2. curriculum of one’s scientific and professional activity, dated and signed, made in the form of self certification;
3. self-certification of the degree obtained, with the indication of the marks obtained in the individual exams and in the degree exam as well as the date of achievement of the degree and the qualifications;
4. titles in original or in copy compliant with the original accompanied by a specific declaration signed;
5. list of qualifications, specialization diplomas and certificates of attendance of post-graduate courses, obtained in Italy or abroad; scholarships or research assignments both in Italy and abroad; degree thesis; other qualifications that the candidate requests are evaluated for the purposes of the competition;
6. list of publications;
7. publications that the candidate wishes to submit for evaluation by the Commission
Selection process
The selection takes place through a comparative evaluation of the qualifications and publications presented by the candidates relating to the research program and the scientific-disciplinary sector of the grant, followed by an interview, which will take place in Italian with assessment also of the knowledge of the English language or in English language with also verification of knowledge of the Italian language for foreign candidates. The Judging Commission made up of highly qualified experts, including those external to the University of Salento, without additional costs to the University budget, is appointed by the Deputy Director of the Department of Cultural Heritage, having obtained the opinion of the Department Council. The Deputy Director of the Department, having ascertained that the candidates who have applied for participation meet the requirements set out in the announcement, sends the candidates’ applications accompanied by the attachments to the Selection Committee. The Commission, in the first meeting, establishes and acknowledges it in specific minutes: the distribution of the scores among the evaluable elements; the criteria for evaluating and assigning scores to qualifications and publications as well as the minimum score to be achieved for the awarding of the research grant. For the purposes of formulating the merit ranking relating to the grants, the commission has 60 (sixty) points available to distribute for the purposes of evaluating qualifications, publications and the interview. No less than 40 (forty) points must be allocated to the evaluation of qualifications and publications. The evaluation of the qualifications must precede the interview and the related results must be made known to the candidates before carrying out the oral test by posting them on the official online noticeboard of the University of Salento and publishing them on the University and Department websites.
The interview will take place on 07/10/2024 at 10:00 CET, in electronic mode: the online platform and connection links will be made known through the publication of a specific notice on the institutional website of the University of Salento www.unisalento.it– “Notices and Competitions” section within 3 days before the date of the interview. Any changes to the calendar will be made known by publishing a specific notice on the institutional website of the University of Salento www.unisalento.it– “Notices and Competitions” section within 3 days before the date of the interview. Failure to present the candidate at the interview will be considered as a waiver of the selection. At the end of its work, the Commission draws up a specific report containing the judgements, the overall score attributed to each candidate and the merit rankings. The merit ranking of the candidates is formed according to the overall score reported by each candidate, given by the sum of the vote obtained in the evaluation of each evaluable element. The Commission forms the merit ranking in descending order. In the event of equal merit, the younger candidate will be preferred. Once the regularity of the competition documents has been ascertained, these rankings are approved by Decree of the Deputy Director of the Department of Cultural Heritage. The final outcome of the selection will be published on the University’s official online noticeboard, on the institutional website of the University of Salento www.unisalento.it– “Notices and Competitions” section.
