Water for the Environment Branch is currently seeking to appoint a Senior Team Leader for our Environmental Water Planning team within DCCEEW’s Biodiversity, Conservation and Science (BCS) group. In this role you will oversee a diverse and capable team leading the provision of science, modelling and planning to support the Water for the Environment program.

The Environmental Water Planning team sits alongside three other teams in the Water for the Environment Branch. The team is highly collaborative, working across the BCS Group, Water Group and NSW Government to ensure strong planning and evidence-based program outcomes for the Water for the Environment program.

The team are highly experienced and work in sub-teams focusing on the review, update and implementation of NSW Long-term Water Plans; input to the NSW Reconnecting River Country program including hydraulic modelling, environmental assessments, ecohydrology and input to policy development; input to the Murray-Darling Basin Authority’s Enhanced Environmental Water Delivery project; and hydraulic modelling to support the NSW Reconnecting Watercourse Program and development of southern floodplain management plans.

About You

 To be successful in the role, you will need to be an effective communicator with a proven ability to establish productive working relationships across Government. You will have experience leading a team of high-performing professionals as well as briefing the Minister and senior executive on complex issues in a clear and concise manner. Technical skills in one or more of water modelling, ecohydrological analysis and planning activities is preferred.

You will have experience in leading staff to deliver results, and demonstrate a sound appreciation of operating in a multi-disciplinary, geographically dispersed team. You have the capacity to develop and recommend innovative and conceptual solutions to support evidence-based decision making, while displaying initiative in addressing complex issues in a rapidly evolving and sometimes unpredictable environment.

The role presents an opportunity to use your scientific, planning and project management skills while working on high-profile water issues.

Key knowledge and experience

  • Knowledge of the operational and strategic requirements for the successful delivery of environmental water planning programs in the context of current policy and legislative frameworks.
  • Experience developing, implementing and monitoring strategic and operational plans for the delivery of complex programs, with a demonstrated track record of providing direction and achieving results through multidisciplinary and geographically dispersed teams.

Participation in the NSW Biodiversity Offsets Scheme (BOS) & BCT’s Private Land Conservation (PLC) Programs

All new employees with an existing defined interest in the BOS will be required to disclose their personal (or a close family member’s) participation to ensure potential conflicts are managed appropriately. In some circumstances this may require divestment of the interest.

The BCT also has restrictions on staff participation in its funded PLC programs. No additional funding, beyond that already agreed to by the BCT, may be sought or approved during time as a BCT employee or for a 12-month period following termination of employment.
