Position Description: | The Department of Earth & Environmental Sciences (EES) in partnership with the Department of Geographical & Sustainability Sciences (GSS) at The University of Iowa invites applications for a tenure-track appointment at the rank of assistant professor in the broad area of environmental geophysics. Twenty-first century societies face enormous environmental challenges and addressing them requires an understanding of contemporary and past environments, how human activities have transformed them, and how societies interact with and are affected by their environments. This position is a key piece of a major initiative within the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences to reposition academic resources around the environment and sustainability. The appointment will begin August 20, 2025. We seek an outstanding researcher with expertise in near surface geophysics, including, but not limited to studies related to hydrologic and (bio)geochemical processes, natural hazards, and climate change. Research interests may include but are not limited to groundwater/surface water interactions, soil moisture dynamics, biological interactions with geologic media, thawing permafrost, contaminant transport and fate, and glacier/ice-sheet dynamics, using tools such as ground-penetrating radar, electromagnetic induction, electrical resistivity, seismic, nuclear magnetic resonance, active/passive microwave, or gravity. Successful candidates are expected to develop an active, externally funded research program, mentor graduate and undergraduate students, and teach introductory courses as well as upper division and graduate courses in environmental geophysics and related fields. The ideal candidate will complement current EES and GSS strengths, support the geoscience and environmental science majors, and develop collaborations both within EES and GSS and with other programs across the University (e.g. Physics & Astronomy (PHYS), the Iowa Geological Survey (IGS), Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE), the Iowa Flood Center, IIHR-Hydroscience & Engineering). Experience and/or plans for mentoring undergraduate and graduate students. Ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, students, and communities across disciplines. |
