Introduction

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Division of Environmental Management’s Water Quality Program is accepting applications for a Senior Water Resources Management Specialist to be responsible for providing technical assistance and oversight of lake water quality, habitat, and watershed management projects, lake assessment and monitoring efforts, and lake planning and management grants. 

The Water Resources Management Specialist position may be headquartered in the Hayward, Spooner, or Superior DNR Service Centers in WI, depending on space availability and the location of the selected candidate.

This recruitment may be used for any similar vacancies that become available in the near future.

Remote work will be available, after the initial onboarding period. The exact amount is based on program need and supervisor discretion.

Position Summary

Senior Water Resources Management Specialist: This position provides technical assistance and oversight of lake water quality, habitat, and watershed management projects, lake assessment and monitoring efforts, and lake planning and management grants.  This position serves as a point of contact for lake planning, management, and partnership-building both within the Department as well as with citizens and community-based lake organizations.  As part of the Water Quality Bureau, this position is also responsible for conducting chemical, biological, and physical monitoring activities to characterize and assess lakes in an assigned portion of the North District.  The position manages, interprets data, and summarizes results for reports and plans. Results are shared with Department staff, counties, other units of government and the general public.  This position is supervised by the District Water Quality Field Supervisor.

Salary Information

Senior Water Resources Management Specialist: starting salary is between $31.50 – $36.00 / hour ($65,520.00 and $ 74,880.00) depending on qualifications. Plus, excellent benefits.

The classification is Water Resources Management Specialist – Senior which is in schedule-range 15 – 03. Pay on appointment will follow the provisions of the State of Wisconsin Compensation Plan.

Job Details

Probationary Period: A 12-month probationary period may be required.

Remote Work:  Based on an assessment of the goals and work activities, this position may be eligible for remote work. Remote work approval is based on individual circumstances and is subject to supervisor approval and DNR telework policies. Approval is subject to change without notice based on business needs.

Travel: Travel within the assigned area of responsibility is frequent (1‐3 days per week) with occasional statewide travel.

Special Requirements: This position will require employees to possess a Boating Safety Education Certificate (often referred to as “Wisconsin boating License” or “Wisconsin Boater Education Card”) as proof that you have successfully completed all state-mandated boater education requirements within first 6 months of the job.

The selected candidate must be able to drive a state vehicle.  Candidates with three (3) or more moving violations and/or at-fault accidents in the past two (2) years, or who have an OWI/DUI violation within the past year are barred from driving state vehicles.

Qualifications

Minimally qualified candidates will have each of the following qualifications:

  • Work experience, formal training (e.g. internship/apprenticeship), or education in environmental or water resource science, environmental studies, aquatic biology, limnology, natural resource conservation, or a related field.
  • Experience developing, communicating, and/or presenting technical information for a variety of audiences.
  • Experience collecting, interpreting, and applying scientific information such as water quality monitoring, data assessment, lake management planning or similar.

In addition, highly qualified candidates will have one or more of the following qualifications:

  • Bachelor or greater degree in environmental or water resource science, environmental studies, aquatic biology, limnology, natural resource conservation, or a related field
  • Experience writing management plans or reports, reviewing and/or administering grant applications and aid agreements.
  • Experience leading a team of diverse stakeholders on lake, watershed or community planning and/or similar projects.
