Job Description:
The Wetland Program within the Division of Wildlife Resources manages some of Utah’s most amazing resources in and around the Great Salt Lake. Utah’s wetlands provide a challenging work environment with staff who are motivated by their love of the resource. The wetland staff working for the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources values teamwork, and we are looking for another strong member of the team.
Job Duties:
The Assistant Wetland Manager will be responsible for the following:
- Administrative: Understand budgeting; possess organizational skills, record keeping, and reporting. Have the ability to fill out reports and paperwork completely.
- Communications: Have verbal and written communication skills, and computer knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and ArcGIS programs.
- Supervisory: Have the ability to supervise personnel, volunteers, Waterfowl Maintenance Crew, and others.
- Knowledge of practices, theories and principles in personnel and human resource management.
- Understand basic hydrology and wetland plant ecology. Have a basic understanding of irrigation system dynamics and design. Have a basic knowledge of agriculture equipment and small-motorized equipment (ATVs, boats, airboats, power tools, etc.) operation and maintenance. Be comfortable using herbicides to control invasive weed species and how to use the equipment.
- Research and Studies: Have an understanding of the principles, theories, design, and practices of conducting research and studies. Be competent with spreadsheets, data management basic analysis, and reporting. Stay current on research literature and field applications in wetland management practices.
- Public relations and representation: Should have good communication and organizational skills for PowerPoint presentation development and making presentations. Be competent in public speaking and working with diverse user groups and age groups. Have good verbal and oral communication skills.
- Biological knowledge skills and abilities: Have an understanding of the basic concepts and principles of wetland management practices. Have a working knowledge of common invasive wetland weed species and control techniques. Be able to identify common bird species using Utah’s wetlands
The Ideal Candidate:
- A Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Wildlife Science or a closely related field and/or 5 years of habitat restoration/ habitat maintenance
- An understanding of how waterfowl hunting plays an important role in conservation.
- Experience working in and around heavy equipment.
- Waterfowl identification skills.
- Wetland plant identification.
- Public relations skills.
- Two years or more experience dealing with invasive plant species
Preference will be given to candidates with a bachelor’s degree in a natural resources field or 5 years of demonstrated successful experience working full-time in a wildlife-related natural resources position.

Qualifications
Knowledge, skills, and abilities:
- Knowledge of Great Salt Lake wetland plants
- Knowledge of Great Salt Lake avian species
- Knowledge of phragmites and other wetland invasive species management
- GIS skills
- Collecting biological data
- Ability to work in and around a strong team, take direction from senior employees, and provide direction to seasonal staff.
- Knowledge of equipment maintenance; ability to safely secure and haul heavy equipment; ability to back up trailers
- Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively; ability to work with the general public
- Willing to learn budgeting, facilities maintenance, and state purchasing procedures
Preference will be given to persons with a:
- Bachelor’s degree in a Natural Resource, Zoology, or wildlife-related field.
- Preference will also be given to persons with 5 or more years of experience in habitat restoration/ habitat maintenance.
Supplemental Information
Working Conditions:
- Risks that require the use of special safety precautions and/or equipment, e.g., working in outdoors in extreme weather and remote locations. Working in wetlands in which numerous hazards exist.
- Working from airboats and other specialized wetland equipment to complete various tasks associated with wetland management (i.e., goose banding, duck banding, data collection, herbicide applications, rotenone treatments).
- Work requires physical exertion. May require the ability to stand, walk over rough surfaces, bend, crouch, stoop, stretch, reach, and lift moderately heavy items (up to 50 pounds) in a recurring manner and/or for long periods.
- Working outdoors in extreme weather and remote locations. Working in motorized agricultural and wetland specialty equipment. Working with pesticides.
- Incumbent will spend 30% of the time in the office and 70% of the time in the field.
- Typical office work.
Typical work schedule:
- Monday – Thursday 7:00 am – 5:30 pm with some Fridays, weekends, and holidays
Requirements:
- Pesticide applicators license, with a 5a Aquatic surface water certification at the time of hire or within a predetermined time frame.
- Some travel including overnight stays lasting up to 4 nights in duration.
- Valid Driver’s License.
