Job Description

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Scientist Associate:

  • Support the implementation of the From Forests to Faucets Partnership and other forest and wildfire management programs through project-level planning and coordination.
  • Analyze forest health and wildfire data, including modeling products and research, to provide data-driven recommendations on the prioritization of wildfire mitigation projects.
  • Participate in the development of forest restoration and wildfire mitigation scopes of work with partners.
  • Engage with and represent Denver Water’s values at various watershed groups, wildfire councils, and other interest groups to collaboratively manage a shared watershed.
  • Communicate effectively with external stakeholders to balance meeting collaborative management goals while protecting Denver Water’s critical infrastructure and water supply.
  • Coordinate with internal Denver Water teams, such as Emergency Management, on wildfire mitigation and preparedness initiatives.
  • Compile, maintain and interpret literature and other reference material, including aerial photographs, maps, charts, diagrams, and tables to obtain and catalogue data.
  • Perform quality control and quality assurance on technical and statistical analyses, reports and plans, and visual/mapping products.
  • Participate in presentations and dissemination of data and cooperative information exchanges.
  • Perform related work as required.

Scientist:

  • Lead the project-level oversight of the From Forests to Faucets Partnership and other forest and wildfire management programs in a project manager role.
  • Analyze forest health and wildfire data, including modeling products and research, to make data-driven decisions on the prioritization of wildfire mitigation projects.
  • Translate wildfire risk data into management strategies to guide Denver Water’s investments in forest restoration and wildfire mitigation.
  • Manage consultant teams and contractors that support the program’s wildfire initiatives.
  • Co-develop forest restoration and wildfire mitigation scopes of work with partners.
  • Engage with and represent Denver Water’s values at various watershed groups, wildfire councils, and other interest groups to collaboratively manage a shared watershed.
  • Communicate effectively with external stakeholders to balance meeting collaborative management goals while protecting Denver Water’s critical infrastructure and water supply.
  • Co-develop wildfire preparedness initiatives with internal Denver Water teams, such as the Emergency Management team.
  • Represent Denver Water forest and wildfire programs among partners and at designated events.
  • Review and prepare oral and written technical reports as well as communication materials for wider audiences.
  • Perform other pertinent related work as requested and required.

Qualifications needed to be successful in this role:

  • In-depth knowledge of natural resources management, forest health, and wildfire mitigation.
  • In-depth knowledge of wildfire impacts on water supplies and strategies for reducing wildfire risk to critical infrastructure.
  • Strong interpersonal skills including demonstrated ability to work on multiple projects in a collaborative team environment, resolve conflicts, and negotiate with multiple workgroups or organizations.

Onsite or Hybrid: Hybrid-This position offers a hybrid schedule working a minimum of two days in the office in the Denver Metro Area

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Environmental Science, Natural Resource Management, Forestry, Watershed Science, or a related field.
  • No related work experience required. – Scientist Associate only
  • Minimum 4 years of related work experience. – Scientist only
  • Any equivalent combination of certifications, education, or experience that provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities for the position.

Licenses, Registration, and Certifications

  • Must be able to possess and maintain a valid Class ‘R’ Colorado driver’s license and have a satisfactory driving record.
