JOB DESCRIPTION

We are seeking a Research associate – climate impact and adaptation specialist to join our Africa Office based in Lomé, Togo, and be a member of our diverse and international Implementation Strategies Team. You will work across several teams and projects focusing on supporting the climate science activities in Africa, the elaboration/revision and implementation of National Adaptation Plans (NAP), Nationally determined Contributions (NDCs), development of Long-term Strategies (LTS) and supporting policies, strategies, and tools, concepts and proposals for accessing financial resources to implement climate actions.

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Research and Analysis:
  • Support climate science work of Africa Office
  • Support research including literature reviews and synthesize relevant research on climate risk and adaptation.
  • Support data analysis related to climate impacts, and risks using statistical and modeling tools.
  • Climate Risk Assessment:
  • Mapping and/or develop tools and methodology for vulnerability and risk assessment
  • Conduct assessments to identify and analyze climate-related risks and vulnerabilities to support development of project proposals (concept note and funding proposal), 
  • NAPs, NDC and LT-LEDS support
  • Support quantitative and qualitative approaches to evaluate climate impact on AFOLU sectors, GHG emission, adaptation options and costs
  • Develop climate change adaptation options, methodologies and tools for prioritization
  • Support NAP development and implementation through climate analysis and adaptation options analysis 
  • Support NDC and LT-LEDS development and implementation especially adaptation component
  • Support the cost-benefices analysis to guide selection of adaptation and mitigation options 
  • Climate finance and capacity building
  • Support the identification and analysis of capacity building needs in adaptation topics
  • Support the development of methods and tools for capacity-building activities, including information and knowledge products and presentations 
  • Contribute to climate projects development (ex. concept note, funding proposal, etc.), especially in adaptation sectors
  • Support and facilitate capacity building in climate finance especially on climate rational and theory of change developing

  2. Support the financial resources mobilization for the office
  3. Support other projects of the organization 
  4. Support logistical on workshop organization
YOUR PROFILE
  • A master’s degree in climate-related studies, scientific research, statistics or a related field 
  • At least 5 years of relevant professional experience in climate change, climate risk assessment
  • Proven experience in climate risk assessment and research, with a strong understanding of climate change impacts and adaptation strategies.
  • Experience with statistical analysis, data modeling, and use of GIS or similar tools is highly desirable.
  • Excellent analytical and writing skills with the ability to summarize and synthesize big volumes of information and/or data for policy and project recommendations/actions 
  • Excellent understanding and experience in NAP and NDC revision and implementation 
  • Good understanding of climate finance processes, modalities and sources is a strong advantage
  • Master of international climate finance mechanism (GCF, AF, GEF)
  • Proficiency in relevant software and tools (e.g., R, Python, GIS, EXACT).
  • High organization skills, being detail-oriented and a motivated self-starter and a team player able to interact and cooperate with a diverse array of people, including remotely in a highly international team 
  • Experience in LT-LEDS is a strong advantage 
  • Our working language is English. Therefore, fluency in English is required, sound proficiency in French is necessary 
  • Willingness to travel regionally and internationally on a needed basis
