Water resources and risk management play a pivotal role for sustainable development and socio- economic security. In recent years, the importance of quantitative models to assess the interdependence between physical processes (i.e. hydrological-hydraulic) and socio-demographic, cultural and economic processes has raised as an emerging scientific topic. These interconnections are the paradigm on which the implementation of WEFE Nexus approaches is based. Studying these interconnections and producing knowledge and predictive models requires significant amounts of data that are not always available. For this reason, this research aims to study and assess new data sources and integrate (or produce new) algorithms supporting the development of tailored data geospatial and bio-physical models characterizing the human-environment matrix. Particular focus will be associated to the development of large-scale simulations of hydro-meteo and environmental risks where quantitative physical processes shall be coupled with socio-behavioural dynamics. Moreover, machine learning and artificial intelligence algorithms will be applied for water resource and risk management studies employing partecipatory citizen, stakeholder and community engagement approaches. Further activities of this research program will eventually related to transdisciplinary WEFE Nexus studies with particular focus on flood risk and large-scale assessment of flooding impacts and related socio-economic feedbacks
