About the Position

IISD is launching a new initiative to advance our understanding of Canada’s rivers and human impacts on these complex ecosystems. Our team is looking for an environmental data analysis assistant to help manage large spatial datasets for advanced watershed modelling. The applicant will have the opportunity to learn about and contribute to the development of vast environmental data sets, cutting-edge machine-learning methods, and policy-oriented research.

The applicant should have good organizational skills and should be comfortable using GIS software. Data management skills and knowledge of environmental science or policy, in particular related to freshwater management, would be valuable to the role. Familiarity with programming languages like R, SQL, Python, or JS is also an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Processing and extracting spatial data for analysis and modelling.
  • Gathering data from public databases or online sources.
  • Organizing, reviewing, and cleaning environmental datasets.
  • Documenting data systems and processes.
  • Proposing solutions to data management problems.
  • Providing clear and succinct progress reports when requested.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Work experience with GIS or completion of at least one course on GIS.
  • Data management experience/completion of a course involving data management.
  • IISD-ELA will require the completion of a criminal record check and vulnerable sector verification.

Asset Skills

  • Knowledge and interest in environmental science or policy, in particular, related to freshwater management.
  • Familiarity with programming languages like R, SQL, Python, or JS.
  • Creative problem-solving and reasoning.
  • Ability to speak French and/or Ojibwe.

Work Conditions

The position will be for remote work. A computer may be provided upon request. Office space may be available according to the successful applicant’s location of residence. The successful applicant may be requested to conduct field visits in Manitoba.

Term: The contract is for a full-time, 4-month term (September 2, 2024 to December 20, 2024).

Compensation: CAD 669 to CAD 894 per week, depending on experience and education. Food and accommodations are included while working on site.
