Are you concerned with the environmental quality of coastal seas? Do you have experience with numerical ocean and/or coastal modelling? We have an interesting job for you! Help us, together with 19 international partners, to improve model interfaces between ocean and coastal models and work on coastal applications. Sounds interesting? Read on
What can you expect as a project researcher?
You will be a core member of the project team for the Horizon Europe funded project, called ‘Forecasting and observing the open-to-coastal ocean for Copernicus users’ (FOCCUS). Your goal is to focus on the assessment of the land-sea interface in the North Sea and on the improvement of model interfaces between Copernicus Marine and the EU Member State coastal services.
Your main tasks include:
- Technical tasks: setting up and working with numerical models and Python based data science tools that are used for coastal water quality modelling. Good insights into numerical modelling are therefore required.
- You will contribute to the development of coastal models in the North Sea on (land-based) pollution mapping and multi-use offshore wind farms with low-trophic level aquaculture, using the Delft3D-Flexible Mesh software suite.
- Aiding in project management, including preparing, attending, and reporting on project meetings.
- Produce timely and high-quality project deliverables.
For all activities you will collaborate intensely with international project partners.
About the FOCCUS project
The vulnerability of coastal zones to natural hazards needs a transformative approach for effective ocean modelling from global to regional and coastal scales. In this context, the EU-funded FOCCUS project aims to revolutionize the Copernicus Marine Service, enhancing coastal monitoring and forecasting through innovative technologies and seamless integration with EU Member State Coastal Services.
Specifically, the project develops new coastal observation products, new hydrological models and improves coastal modelling and forecasting approaches.
Deltares leads the work on Coastal Applications, where the scientific and technological improvements will be implemented and tested for specific end-user cases. As part of the Deltares team, you will be a user of these new products and you will apply them in our numerical simulation software in the North Sea to address topics such as mapping land-based pollution and impacts of multi-use offshore wind farms.
The project runs between 2024 and 2026.
What do we expect from you?
- 0- 5 years experience and a scientific background (MSc or PhD) related to coastal biogeochemical modelling. For example Hydroinformatics, Coastal engineering, Oceanography, Marine Science and Environmental Science;
- Excellent programming skills with preference on Python;
- Existing ocean and/or coastal modelling experience and data analysis skills preferably related to biogeochemical processes;
- Fluent in English, Speaking and writing, with quality reporting skills;
- Analytical and presentation skills to communicate research results.
Due to the international character of the job, willingness to travel abroad and work with international project members is a must. Availability latest by 1st January 2025 is a requirement.
What we offer:
We offer a temporary position (1.0 FTE) at Deltares for the duration of the project (2-year). Ater this assignment, there is the option to discuss the possibilities of continuing employment within Deltares. Furthermore, we offer:
