Duties and Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Programme Officer, and in close collaboration with the project team, the incumbent will perform the following tasks: – Elaborate and draft a gender-sensitive risk assessment methodology that takes into consideration the interrelation between climate security and violent extremism in West Africa and the Sahel and revise the content by incorporating comments received by UNICRI personnel; – Incorporate in the methodology local knowledge as well as a youth and gender perspective; – Analyse material, information and data on direct or indirect interactions that climate stressors have on social, political, economic, and environmental factors in the target region; – Contribute to the design of a national validation workshop to be held in Nouakchott, Mauritania, to present the methodology to relevant national stakeholders, including national authorities, universities, think tanks, CSOs, and other UN agencies; – Perform other work-related duties as requested.

Qualifications/special skills

Advanced university degree (i.e. Master or equivalent) in social studies, criminology, security or other related fields is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two (2) additional years of professional work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. A minimum of three years of relevant working experience in conducting research and analysis on topics related to social sciences, security and violent extremism and/or climate insecurity is required; Previous work experience on issues pertaining to prevention of violent extremism and/or climate insecurity in West Africa and Sahel is required; Previous relevant experience with the United Nations is desirable.

Languages

For the position advertised, fluency in English and French is required. Knowledge of Arabic is desirable.
