Please note: this position is paid on an hourly basis and limited to 1500 hours per calendar year. The salary range for Scientific Aid is $17.73 – $21.04 per hour.

The Lahontan Water Board’s Regulatory and Enforcement Unit has one Scientific Aid opening. The position is located at 2501 Lake Tahoe Boulevard, South Lake Tahoe, CA 96150.

Under the direct supervision of the Senior Water Resource Control Engineer, the Scientific Aid will work with the technical staff in the South Lake Tahoe Office. Consistent with good customer service practices and the goals of the State and Regional Water Board’s Strategic Plan, the incumbent is expected to be courteous and to provide timely responses to internal and external customers, to follow through on commitments, and to solicit and consider internal and external customer input when completing work assignments.

Duties:

  • Reviewing Self-Monitoring Reports, submitted from facilities under permit. The reports will be associated with discharges to land, and surface water. The facilities vary from construction sites to wastewater treatment plants.
  • Documenting violations and enforcement actions through database entry.
  • Assisting with technical, regulatory, and administrative procedures related to monitoring report submittal and follow up.
  • Reviewing environmental scoping documents and Notice of Preparation and California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) documents associated with construction activities, waste discharge to land, and discharges to surface waters.
  • Updating facility data and uploading documents to various databases.
  • Assisting in the preparation for field inspections by organizing sample collection equipment, documenting sample locations on maps, and transporting samples to a laboratory. Assisting with field investigation such as complaints or inspections, including collecting water samples, and making field measurements, taking field notes, taking photographs and preparing reports.
  • Using Excel, Power Point and other software tools to prepare graphs, tables, and other visual representations of data.
  • Assist in producing staff reports on complaints and facilities under regulation or are not presently regulated that may need to be regulated.
  • Assist in general office duties.

Salary information – CalHR salary rules allow appointment at the entrance rate (Cal. Code Regs., tit. 2, § 599.673) of a classification. For classes with alternate ranges, placement is based on education/experience.
