Duties
The student will be required to collaborate with Memorial University faculty and students, Environment and Climate Change Canada employees, and local stakeholders to plan, facilitate, and carry out field data collection using various methods including peat coring, surface peat sampling, and water collection. Experience working in a laboratory is an asset and knowledge on stable isotopes, soil carbon estimates, and diatoms will be beneficial to a successful MSc. Following data collection, the student will complete qualitative and quantitative data analysis, report writing, and potentially attend professional development events (including conferences).
Work environment
The student will be based at the St. John’s Campus of Memorial University and work under the supervision of Dr. Kathryn Hargan.
The student will complete course work as required by the program of study and, in so doing, will become more fully acquainted with the research context, relevant methods, and associated theoretical and analytical frameworks required for the study. The research done as part of this program must be applicable and relevant to the student’s thesis. This project will be largely student-led, so the student must be self-motivated and comfortable working independently.

Education:
• The student must hold a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline (e.g. biology, ecology, resource management) and be currently enrolled, or intend to enroll by September 2024, as a full-time student, in the Master of Science in Biology program at the St. John’s Campus of Memorial University. The research done as part of this program must be applicable and relevant to the student’s thesis.
Experience:
• Experience conducting field work and applying aquatic ecology sampling methods to peatlands.
Knowledge:
• Knowledge in freshwater biology, limnological sampling methods, as well as natural resource sciences as it relates to peatlands.
Competencies:
• Ability to complete qualitative and quantitative data analysis using statistical software.
• Ability to present ideas and critical analyses in writing and orally.
• Ability to work independently
• Work effectively with others
• Strong organizational skills
• Judgement.
