The Nature Conservancy in Rhode Island is part of the Stormwater Innovation Center (SIC) based in Roger Williams Park. The SIC uses the City of Providence’s investment in green stormwater structures to understand stormwater quality and benefits to wildlife habitat. In addition, the SIC provides training and education to municipalities and conducts outreach and community engagement. The Urban Stormwater Outreach Education Coordinator will contribute to the Stormwater Innovation Center’s work with the Cyanobacteria Monitoring Collaborative.

WHAT WE CAN ACHIEVE TOGETHER

The Urban Stormwater Outreach Education Coordinator implements community outreach and educational strategies that effectively communicate the Stormwater Innovation Center’s cyanobacteria and water quality monitoring program. The coordinator will work cooperatively with Conservancy staff, partner organizations, agencies, and businesses to translate scientific data into meaningful and relevant outputs for diverse audiences.

This individual provides monitoring demonstrations and with the aid of Nature Conservancy staff, recruits and trains community members to monitor ponds in RI watersheds. The coordinator will also help conduct cyanobacteria assessments weekly and organize outreach activities to engage the public about stormwater impacts on cyanobacteria blooms. This role also provides an opportunity to participate in additional coastal monitoring projects including fish surveys and habitat monitoring conducted by the coastal restoration team when needed.

This is a 12-week position beginning in mid-August and end in mid-November. It is a full-time, temporary, in-person position (35 hours per week) with a flexible work schedule option. This position could be part-time with flexible hours if preferred by the candidate. The Urban Stormwater Outreach Education Coordinator is supervised by the Coastal Restoration Scientist. This is an hourly position with a rate between $20 and $22 per hour depending on experience.

WHAT YOU’LL BRING

  • Graduate student enrolled in a URI program or graduate level research interest relating to stormwater.
  • Experience coordinating projects.
  • Experience following standard procedures and/or quality assurance plans.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Basic understanding of cyanobacteria life history
  • Multi-lingual skills appreciated.
  • Multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience preferred.
  • Experience with public education associated with conservation projects or closely related fields.
  • Ability to sell ideas to a variety of people and interest groups.
  • Ability to organize time, manage diverse activities, and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to solicit program support through clear written communications, such as proposal writing and other written materials.
  • Ability to obtain a driver’s license and maintain a good driving record.
  • General comfort being in or near the water.

SALARY INFORMATION

The starting pay range for a candidate selected for this position is generally within the range of $20.00 – $22.00 per hour. This range only applies to candidates whose country of employment is the USA. Where a successful candidate’s actual pay will fall within this range will be based on a variety of factors, including, for example, the candidate’s location, qualifications, specific skills, and experience. Please note countries outside the USA would have a different pay range in the local currency based on the local labor market, and not tied to USA pay or ranges. Your geographic location will be confirmed during the recruitment.
