About Our Opportunity
This is a 1-year term opportunity to work alongside a dynamic and diverse team of passionate scientists, engineers and technicians whose work drives the protection and stewardship of our province’s water resources.
Primary Accountabilities
As a Water Resource Engineer, you will be responsible for:
- Hydroelectric power regulatory approvals, including the review of regulatory submissions, engagement with key stakeholders, and recommendations for regulatory requirements associated with this activity.
- Reviewing and evaluating technical reports and submissions received in support of regulatory approvals, including the review of environmental assessments.
- Contributing to the vision, long term goals and strategies for advancing the department’s approach to watercourse alterations and erosion and sediment control.
- Using strategic thinking, lead the development of regulatory amendments, standards, guidelines, policies and procedures and internal training tools to support program outcomes.
- Use critical thinking, judgment and initiative to guide major regulatory processes with scientifically sound information and demonstrate initiative in increasing awareness of complex business, environmental and scientific issues faced.
- Providing support as a subject matter expert to both internal and external stakeholders, including but not limited to other departmental staff, senior leadership, in public meetings, community outreach programs, interdepartmental task forces or committees, and others.
Qualifications and Experience
You are a Professional Engineer (P.Eng) licensed to practice in Nova Scotia, or eligible to be licensed in Nova Scotia, with a Bachelor of Engineering in Civil Engineering, Water Resources Engineering, or Environmental Engineering. To ensure you are successful in this role, you have at least 6 years of applied experience in the following areas:
- The design, construction, and/or monitoring of culverts, bridges, road drainage, natural channel design and restoration, fish passage infrastructure, and erosion and sediment controls.
- Development of surface water quantity monitoring plans and the collection, analysis, and the application of hydrometric data.
- The assessment and/or mitigation of hydroelectric impacts on the aquatic ecosystem.
- Synthesis and communication of technical information to a variety of audiences.
- Project management and stakeholder engagement.
The following additional qualifications and experience will be considered assets:
- Experience reviewing and evaluating the impacts of dam construction or operations on the aquatic ecosystem.
- Strong computer skills in spreadsheets, word processing and presentation packages.
- Knowledge of provincial and federal legislation, regulations, policies and programs relevant to water resources management in Nova Scotia.
- Superior written and verbal communication skills that allow you to synthesize and articulate complex technical information to a range of technical and non-technical audiences.

Working Conditions
This position offers benefits to support a healthy work-life balance, such as:
- Flexible work locations and hours (Normal work week is 35 hours/week, 7 hours/day).
- Long weekend every 3 weeks with our earned day off work plan.
- Minimal work travel within the Province so you can be home each night.
- Little to no overtime expected, but when required, we compensate you for it.

Additional Information
This is a term opportunity located in Halifax with an anticipated end date of August 2025, and allows the option for flexible working locations and hours. However, the position status (“term”, “temporary” or “casual”) is dependent on the start date of the successful candidate.

Pay Grade: PR 18
Salary Range: $3,231.58 – $3,800.42 Bi-Weekly
