JOB DESCRIPTION

About the Team

The Climate Science and Impacts team (hereafter referred to as Science Team) is a dynamic place for natural and social scientists to do meaningful research on climate change. Climate Analytics aims to close the loop between emissions pathways, global climate projections, climate impacts and the application of climate services at the regional to sub-national level. We are committed to supporting the achievement of the Paris Agreement’s 1.5 degree Celsius Long Term Temperature Goal and are striving to provide the science needed to drive climate ambition. Our team includes expertise on scenario research, global climate projections, climate action, impacts, adaptation, and loss and damage. We have a strong focus on stakeholder engagement, particularly with Small Island Developing States and Least Developed Countries.
The Science Team works on an exciting array of third-party funded projects that contribute to the global discourse on climate science and policy. The Team also generates regionally specific scientific knowledge to make sure those working on the ground to implement climate mitigation, adaptation and loss and damage strategies have access to the best science.
Within Climate Analytics, the Science Team works closely with other teams, particularly the Implementation Strategies team, the Climate Policy and Diplomacy team, and with our regional offices in Africa, Australia/Pacific, the Caribbean, North America, and South Asia, ensuring the organisation’s overall work is based on the best available science.
With our expanding regional presence through offices in the Caribbean, Africa, South Asia, the US and Australia-Pacific, there will be ample opportunities for you to work across and provide scientific leadership to various regions, including the most vulnerable countries. You will also author a variety of scientific outputs ranging from reports, blogs, and peer-reviewed publications to interactive tools.
We offer a dynamic working atmosphere in an international and interdisciplinary team with great connections in a network of partner institutes and stakeholders. You will have the opportunity to engage with the international climate change negotiations and support our work with stakeholders globally – particularly those in small island states, the least developed countries and other vulnerable countries.

Job description

We are seeking a Climate Adaptation and Risk Analyst to join Climate Analytics, informing national and international strategies to address Loss & Damage, Adaptation and Limits to Adaptation. This role is pivotal in supporting the Science Team in leading research, policy analysis, and technical assistance in these areas, with a particular focus on developing countries that are particularly vulnerable to the adverse effects of climate change. The successful candidate will integrate efforts between our Science and Implementation Strategies Teams to enhance our evidence-based support to developing countries.

Your responsibilities

Research and Analysis

  • Contribute to cutting-edge research on quantitative assessments of climate change risks, informing policies to address loss & damage, in the context of adaptation and limits to adaptation.
  • Develop, analyse, and/or apply risk assessment frameworks, quantifying vulnerabilities and the (residual) economic and non-economic impacts of climate change in the context of adaptation (limits).
  • Collaborate closely with policy analysts to support the interpretation of models and quantitative analyses at both national and subnational levels.

Policy Development

  • Make analytical contributions to the development of both national or sub-national loss & damage and adaptation strategies and policies.
  • Interpret and apply key findings from UNFCCC decisions and IPCC science to advance the implementation of adaptation actions at the country level, ensuring that international guidelines are effectively translated into practical, localized strategies.

Stakeholder and Country Engagement

  • Collaborate with international research counterparts and stakeholders to foster and promote understanding and action on adaptation and loss & damage.
  • Contribute to workshops and training sessions to build capacity among vulnerable communities and policymakers, particularly in SIDS and other developing countries that are particularly vulnerable.
  • Develop and maintain a network within the adaptation and loss & damage community, focusing on sharing best practices and knowledge exchange.

Project Development and Research Innovation

  • Collaborate with the team lead and project development experts to support the development of proposals for new research project opportunities. This includes leveraging successful projects, and on-the-ground experiences to identify gaps in support and scientific research.
