Duties and Responsibilities

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. The West Asia Office delivers advisory services and capacity building support to countries to achieve environment and sustainable development objectives. This consultancy is established at the West Asia Office within the framework of the Strategic Cooperation Agreement between UNEP and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The expert will report to the Project Manager at UNEP West Asia Office. Under the direct supervision of the Project Manager in UNEP West Asia Office and in coordination with the respective department in the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture (MEWA) of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Consultant will carry-out, inter alia, the following duties & responsibilities: 1. Technical review, feedback, and comments on KSA Vulnerability Assessment Report. 2. Technical review, feedback, and comments on the climate change adaptation vision workshop and gap analysis report. 3. In-depth review, guidance, and feedback on the National Adaptation draft Strategy. 4. In-depth review and comments on the draft Sectoral adaptation program of the 8 sectors. 5. In-depth review and comments on the Strategy Enablers Report. 6. In-depth review and comments on the strategy’s implementation roadmap.

Qualifications/special skills

• Master’s degree in climate change, environmental science or any other relevant field is required. PHD is an asset. A minimum of 10 years of relevant work experience in climate change, climate science, climate adaptation and mitigation strategies, and land carbon sequestration processes is required. Demonstrated experience with creating strategic plans, climate action plans, or other similar environmental or sustainability plans is desirable. Knowledge of climate change and environment issues in Saudi Arabia is an asset. Experience working in West Asia is desirable.

Languages

Fluency in written and spoken English and Arabic is required.
