Description

Atmospheric dynamics play a key role in determining the nature and strength of radiative and hydrologic climate feedbacks. Changes in climate will affect the major features of the atmospheric circulation, from the Hadley cell to the baroclinic jets, and these changes will feed back on the properties of the cloud, radiation, and precipitation fields. These radiative and hydrologic climate feedbacks are highly significant in determining the overall impact of climate change. The research questions that arise relate to the potential changes in the atmospheric circulation with climate warming and the related changes in the global cloud, radiation, and precipitation fields. We use a combined investigation of in situ observations, remote sensing and climate model simulations to analyze atmospheric dynamics properties and processes and their effects on the water and energy cycles, and to evaluate the ability of models to simulate those interactions and produce credible projections of future change in these quantities.
