The School of Natural and Built Environment at Queen’s University Belfast is seeking to appoint an exceptional candidate to the post of postdoctoral research associate in Drinking Water Treatment. Endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs), which bind to hormone receptors and affect the endocrine system, are an emerging problem in water treatment, with a large amount of effort expended in removing them from drinking water. The standard workflow for screening materials to remove EDCs from water is time- and resource-intensive. The successful candidate will use laboratory bench scale procedures to investigate the effectiveness of a number of reactive materials to remove EDCs, particularly triclosan and bisphenol A, from drinking water. Material characterisation analysis including XRD, SEM and TEM will also be used. The information collected will be used in conjunction with another part of the project using atomistic simulations to build a database for pre-screening a material for EDC removal from drinking water.

About the person:
The successful candidate must have a PhD in chemistry, chemical engineering, biological sciences, or a related discipline either awarded or submitted by the time of taking up the post. Competence in the usage of laboratory equipment and experience in carrying out highly skilled laboratory analysis using high precision micro-pipetting, mixing reagents, and calculating concentrations of solutions is essential. Experience with material characterisation methods and/or the water industry is desirable.

To be successful at shortlisting stage, please ensure you clearly evidence in your application how you meet the essential and, where applicable, desirable criteria listed in the Candidate Information.

Fixed term contract posts are available for the stated period in the first instance but in particular circumstances may be renewed or made permanent subject to availability of funding.
