Call for Junior Rapporteurs - Alpine Rivers Symposium 2024

Onewater

Burghausen, Germany 🇩🇪

Onewater and the City of Burghausen are currently looking for Junior Rapporteurs for the Alpine Rivers Symposium (ARS), scheduled for August 9-11, 2024.

Nestled in the historic town of Burghausen, Bavaria, the ARS will explore the significant ecological, cultural, and economic dimensions of Alpine rivers, with a particular focus on their future in the context of climate change.

About the Alpine Rivers Symposium:

The Alps, Europe’s water towers, hold about 40% of the continent’s freshwater and support a wide array of streams, rivers, and biodiversity that have shaped local culture for centuries. These regions are crucial for hydroelectric power, providing energy to millions and supporting industries like tourism and agriculture. However, the effects of climate change pose significant threats to water availability and the natural, cultural and economic landscapes. For instance, it is predicted that up to 90% of Alpine glaciers will melt within the next few decades.

In this context, the inaugural ARS aims to explore the definition of a healthy Alpine river, the strategies needed to adapt to existing and emerging environmental changes, and which proactive measures might positively shape the future of this region.
