The Department of Geosciences and Geography at the Faculty of Science is the leading research and education unit in its field in Finland. In addition to research in geology, geophysics and geography, research into seismology and official duties in the field of seismology is carried out at the department.
Faculty of Science invites applications for a
POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER IN HYDROGEOCHEMISTRY starting from September 2024, or as agreed, and continuing until the end of August 2026. There will be a six-month trial period for the position.
Position description
We seek for a postdoctoral researcher in hydrogeochemistry to join our multidisciplinary team to conduct research in bedrock groundwater and dissolved gases to address questions related to the Earth’s deep hydrological cycle and origin and evolution of crustal gases, particularly hydrogen. You will mainly be working in the Research Council of Finland funded project DAFNE-22: Deep life, Hydrogeology and Geothermics, with a focus on hydraulically stimulated, seismically active fractured rock environments. We look for an advanced and proven expertise in low-temperature geochemistry, hydrogeology, and isotope systems. Expertise in hydrogeochemical sampling, data analysis, modelling and familiarity with geothermal hard rock reservoir will be an asset. We also value good scientific and interpersonal communication skills, and the ability to produce scientific text efficiently.
Postdoctoral training at the University of Helsinki takes place in a rich scholarly environment involving interaction with faculty, staff scientists, postdocs, and students of the Department of the Geosciences and Geography.
Qualifications
According to the Regulations of the University of Helsinki, an appointee to the position of postdoctoral researcher shall hold a relevant doctoral degree and have the ability to conduct independent scholarly work as well as the teaching skills necessary for the position. The postdoctoral researcher should have a doctoral degree in geology, geochemistry, hydrogeology, Earth sciences or any relevant field offering the skills for the study of hydrogeochemistry. PhD diploma is to be acquired by the first day of employment.

The starting salary of the postdoctoral researcher will be ca. 3700-3900 euros/month, depending on the appointees’ qualifications and experience.
