Job description
We are the Environment Agency. Working with Government, councils, businesses, and communities, we create a better place for people and wildlife. You’ll sit at the heart of our work to transform our planning and regulation of the water industry to improve the water environment.
We’re looking for innovative people to support the Environment Agency’s work on water company Drainage & Wastewater Management Plans (DWMPs). This work will achieve strategically important benefits for the environment across flood risk and water quality.
You’ll be responsible for:
- Developing relationships with water companies, and provide consistent, technical advice, guidance and input into the development of their DWMPs.
- Reviewing and responding to the draft and final DWMPs and annual reviews.
- Influencing how water companies plan to extend, improve and maintain a robust and resilient drainage and wastewater system in the face of pressures from climate change, urban development and a growing population.
- Building strong relationships with local water & sewerage companies, stakeholders and operational teams to support the development of robust water company DWMPs.
- Escalating risks and issues, and working with the DWMP leadership team, Integrated Environmental Planning (IEP) and Partnership & Strategic Overview (PSO) teams in Operations , Water Company Account Managers to ensure mitigations are in place.

The team
We are a small, dispersed team, in Environment & Business. Co-location with Area Operations and Account Management teams and easy travelling distance for water company meetings is imperative, so only the following base locations will be considered for each role:
South West: Exeter, Bridgewater, Blandford Forum, Bodmin
Midlands: Birmingham, Lichfield, Tewkesbury, Shrewsbury, Nottingham, Peterborough, Lincoln.
South East: Reading, Worthing, London, Welwyn, Chichester, Romsey
North West: Warrington, Penrith, Preston, Carlisle
North East: Leeds, Darlington, Newcastle, York
Experience/skills required
- Technical competency of drainage, surface water, wastewater engineering, wastewater treatment and / or sewerage systems is essential.
- Experience of partnering and building relationships, acting as a key interface with customers.
- Eye for detail and ability to examine and analyse data, presenting facts/findings in a logical/well-structured manner.
- Confidence in providing direction, challenging, and questioning to develop a better outcome, prioritising delivery of reputational, political and / or technically complex partnering/customer-facing activities.
- Ability to articulate business needs effectively, understanding of business concepts and application in the Water Industry sector.
- Self-starter, motivated to achieve outcomes with appetite to work collaboratively across teams and with our stakeholders and partners towards a common goal.
- Passion for innovation and continuous improvement.
- Ability to problem solve and raise emerging threats/issues.
- Passion for developing and supporting people and bring others with you.
- Line management experience would be desirable.
