Freshwater GIS Remote Sensing Project Manager

South Atlantic Environmental Research Institute (SAERI)

Falkland Islands (Islas Malvinas) 🇫🇰

Details

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced project manager to lead a remote sensing project, which will establish currently unknown trends in Falkland Islands freshwater dynamics. With the assistance of project partners, the project manager will analyse satellite Imagery to quantify past, present and future freshwater dynamics.

A major threat to FI biodiversity and livelihoods is a drying climate. As warming continues, FI water security is a growing concern – but we lack baseline data to inform mitigation and adaptation. This project will assess FI past and present freshwater dynamics (soil moisture, surface water), and identify how freshwater dynamics are influenced by land use. The incumbent will also model future scenarios and identify habitats prone to drying. Finally, climate change resilience and mitigation will be mainstreamed into management through workshops. We envisage the role will entail about 20% fieldwork and 80% desk based.

This 2-year position is based in the Falkland Islands at SAERI’s head office on Ross Road in the centre of Stanley. The project is a Darwin Plus project funded through UK government.

The project is led by SAERI but involves project partners including Falkland Islands Government and UKCEH. The candidate will have to work effectively and collaboratively within this partnership.

The successful candidate will:

●        Use freely available Landsat and Sentinel satellite imagery to assess past (last 30 y) and present freshwater dynamics (surface water extent and soil moisture (e.g. Normalized Difference Moisture Index, Soil Water Index).

●        Model future scenarios of freshwater dynamics using a number of data-driven gridded models

●        Lead the running and delivery of the project, with the support of project partners. Project administration tasks include writing progress reports to the funder, managing the project budget and holding regular project management group meetings. Previous successful project management and excellent organisation skills are essential for this role.

●        The project will also include stakeholder consultations with landowners and engagement with local media.

The job description is not an exclusive or exhaustive definition of the duties attached to this post.  The successful incumbent shall undertake such additional or other duties as may reasonably be required by their line manager commensurate with the position.
