The Ministry of Water, Land and Resource Stewardship is accountable for integrated land and natural resource management of water, land, fish and wildlife, and implementing integrated decision-making on these resources in partnership with First Nations, communities and other ministries. The Water, Fisheries and Coast Division brings together program areas responsible for the Watershed Security Strategy and associated Fund, Wild Salmon Strategy and Coastal Marine Strategy.  The division works to support functioning and resilient marine, aquatic and coastal ecosystems that support a diversity of economic activities and province the foundation for vibrant and thriving coastal communities and cultures.

The Water Management Branch is accountable for operational delivery of provincial water programs including managing and regulating the allocation of water resources, ensuring safe and reliable community water supplies; and protecting public health and safety through River Forecast Centre operations, flood hazard management, regulation of dikes and dams, and supporting emergency response. 

Reporting to the Head, Water Allocation, the Water Management Engineer provides professional engineering guidance and expert technical advice to ministry staff, local authorities, federal agency reps, First Nations officials and British Columbia residents for the engineering planning and management of the Water Allocation Program and water licensing applications. The position is accountable for providing professional engineering reviews, statutory decisions and fulfilling other responsibilities conferred through legislative and regulatory authority.

Job Requirements:

  • Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering, Water Resource Engineering or other directly related natural resource field; OR
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering, Water Resource Engineering or other directly related natural resource field, PLUS two (2) years directly related experience.
     

Professional Designation:

  • Registered or *immediately eligible for registration as a fully qualified Professional Engineer with the Engineers & Geoscientists of British Columbia (EGBC). NOTE: *Immediately eligible for registration is defined as being able to transfer a current membership from an applicable jurisdiction.  Applicants must confirm their eligibility with the EGBC.  Confirmation of registration/eligibility will be required before an offer of employment can be made.
     

Experience:         

  • Experience providing professional engineering expertise in the planning, design, maintenance and operation of water management systems.
  • Experience conducting structural and design assessments and preparing supply management plans.
  • Experience in forecasting, monitoring and analyzing water management systems.
  • Experience providing professional, engineering or scientific expertise, advice and recommendations to executive and senior management, and to others engaged in the delivery of water management programs, initiatives or activities.
  • Experience developing program and/or operational plans; preparing professional engineering reports; and leading research strategies and projects associated with water resource management.

About this Position:
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to 2 days at home per week subject to an approved telework agreement.
