Organizational History – Nature Conservancy India Solutions Private Limited (NCIS) is one of the group entity of The Nature Conservancy (TNC). NCIS is a private limited company incorporated under the Companies Act 2013, having it registered office in India in New Delhi. India. The company currently provides technical consultancy, monitoring & evaluation, and other related services in the domain of conservation and environment to its various clients within and outside India. NCIS helps its clients in achieving their environmental and conservation targets by providing science-based solutions and technical support. NCIS has been providing services to its various clients for last three years in India.
WHAT WE CAN ACHIEVE TOGETHER
Specialist Climate Change and Adaptation will lead our Climate Adaptation portfolio of work, which is currently focused on Chennai but is likely to expand to other locations as well as pan-India issues. They will provide strategic, technical, and managerial leadership to the Climate Adaptation team, formulate its overall priorities, and initiate key projects. They will also provide technical guidance towards strategy, planning and project implementation across the organization particularly in climate change adaptation (CCA) and conservation models. They will serve as the principal contact for clients, government agencies, and other organizations working on similar issues. They will play a leading role in client identification, cultivation, and stewardship for their area of work. They will establish NCIS as a major player within their area of expertise. They may work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances depending on the nature of projects being implemented by NCIS. The position may require frequent travel domestically and/or internationally and evening and weekend hours.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Specialist Climate Change and Adaptation will oversee the implementation of our strategies related to climate adaptation in India, including, but not limited to, ecosystem approach, nature-based solutions, green printing, and ‘Development by design’. They will provide technical leadership as a subject matter expert for climate adaptation in a variety of initiatives. They will build upon the current body of work to have a cohesive and comprehensive climate adaptation strategy to meet the organization’s goals related to people and nature.
They will build the organization’s technical and programmatic capacity in the field of climate adaptation and collaborate with other organizations, researchers, and practitioners to enhance our impact, both at the field and policy level. They may also negotiate complex and innovative solutions with clients, government agencies, academic and research institutions, corporations, and local partners to promote climate adaptation at scale. They will strive to provide consultancy inputs to mainstream climate adaptation strategies in the local/regional/national planning processes. They will develop and manage the climate adaptation team, consultants, and partners to ensure effective and successful delivery of our priority projects. They will also help establish NCIS as a major player within the Indian climate adaptation space and represent the organization in a variety of fora.
WE’RE LOOKING FOR YOU
The Specialist Climate Change and Adaptation will undertake the following functions, in collaboration with the programme in-charge, external advisors and within the overall mandate of the defined project deliverables:
Roles and responsibilities:
- Develops and implements the strategy to achieve the organization’s goals and quantified targets related to climate adaptation.
- Strengthens and develops the climate adaptation portfolio of NCIS for impact at scale by pursuing various business opportunities. Promotes NCIS leadership and visibility in the area of climate adaptation.
- Acts as the technical liaison within and outside of the organization; may provide training on climate adaptation and other conservation issues, including spatial planning, wetland, forest and grassland management, green infrastructure, nature-based solutions, and other related issues.
- Makes strategic decisions based on sound analysis and judgement in consultation with the organization’s leadership.
- Leads stakeholder consultations on climate adaptation issues.
- Collaborates with a wide range of partners to identify projects and associated research needs, present technical concepts, and support fieldwork.
- Negotiates complex agreements, managing risks and anticipating challenges.
- Recruits, retains, and manages high quality and effective multi-disciplinary staff, consultants, and partners with responsibility for performance management and successful delivery of projects.
- Supports team members to effectively implement complex projects – both analytical and field-oriented.
- Establishes and maintains optimal performance standards within budget. Oversees preparation of contracts, proposals, and client reports.
- Takes responsibility for all budgeting and financial management aspects of the portfolio of climate adaptation projects
- Resolves complex problems through systematic analysis and effective leadership.
- Persuasively conveys NCIS mission and USP to diverse groups including potential clients, corporates, academics, and others critical to the organizational vision and mission.
- Co-leads preparation of succinct reports and other communication products for a wide range of audiences.
- May require frequent travel domestically and/or internationally.
WHAT YOU’LL BRING
- BA/BS degree and 5 years’ experience in conservation practice or equivalent combination of
- education and experience.
- Experience managing complex or multiple projects, including staffing, workloads and finances under deadlines.
- Supervisory experience, including motivating, leading, setting objectives and managing performance.
- Experience in partnership development with non-profit partners, community groups and/or government agencies
- Experience negotiating.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Masters in Environment Policy or Science, Climate Science, Business Administration, Planning or any other technical field such as conservation, forestry, agriculture, or economics
- At least 15 years’ experience, including 10 years in a senior manager role
- Adept on functioning of state and national government agencies and non-government organizations in climate adaptation
- Deep understanding of the implications of climate change on key sectors
- Ability to provide guidance on the integration of climate risk management and, development of long term and medium-term responses to climate change
- Multi- lingual and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated
- Experience of working on a range of projects on conservation and environment
- Knowledge of project management tools/methods and experience of conceiving and implementing strategic initiatives
- Good communications skills – written, spoken, and graphical
- Politically savvy
- Experience of working at a state level on climate adaptation projects
- Knowledge on climate change
- Experience of directing a major program or project of strategic importance, including management/ supervision of multi-disciplinary teams and meeting deadlines
- Experience with financial management of a large program
- Supervisory experience, including motivating, leading, setting objectives, and managing performance.
- Business development experience, including identifying and cultivating potential clients
- Experience of working with current trends and practices related to climate change issues in India
- Experience in developing partnerships with government agencies and other stakeholders
- Experience influencing, developing, and implementing climate adaptation projects, programs, and/or plans at the local, state, or country level
- Fluency in English, Hindi and one regional language
