Goose Creek Association is hiring for a part time (15-25 hours/week) River Steward based in Middleburg, Virginia to support our programs in the Goose Creek watershed of Loudoun and Fauquier Counties.
Goose Creek Association (GCA) is a 501c3 environmental and conservation watershed organization with an office in Middleburg, Virginia. GCA works to protect and preserve the Goose Creek, a State designated Scenic River, with volunteer oriented programs, including: stream monitoring, riparian buffer plantings, river cleanup, as well as outreach and education programs.
Foremost, the River Steward will lead GCA’s stream monitoring, tree planting/riparian buffer, stream clean-up, and Meaningful Watershed Education Experience programs. The River Steward will work with similar partnership organizations to promote GCA’s programs. The River Steward should be knowledgeable regarding Best Management Practices (BMPs) and funding resources in the rural and suburban Goose Creek watershed and be able to share that knowledge with the public and residents. In addition, the River Steward should interact with Board members and attend Board meetings to provide updates and summaries regarding the volunteer programs.
The River Steward will contribute to GCA social media, website content, and local media outlets in coordination with the Administration and Communications Manager. The River Steward will maintain volunteer and public attendance records, and will report directly to the Administration and Communications Manager.
DUTIES
Program Management: Working with the Administration and Communications Director and the Board, will oversee the operations of each of the programs below:
- Benthic and chemical stream monitoring with volunteers
- Riparian buffer planting in partnership with the county soil and water districts and with volunteers
- Annual river cleanup program with volunteers
- MWEE program in elementary schools
- NOVA Parks partnership at Battle of Upperville Park
- Outreach, education, and assistance on agricultural cost-share programs and other funding programs for BMPs
The River Steward will work with the Administration and Communications Director to set goals for membership/volunteer development, local fundraising, grant writing and outreach activities in the Goose Creek watershed.
REQUIREMENTS
Necessary Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s or higher degree in Env. Science, Biology, Ecology, Natural Resource Management or related degree
- Self starter who demonstrates competence, initiative, and ability to work independently
- Must be willing to work outside in varying weather conditions
- Comfortable speaking in front of small and large groups
- Experience coordinating trainings, events, meetings
- Google Suite/Microsoft Word/Excel proficient
- Competency in social media platforms
- Passion for environmental protection and conservation
- Comfortable with water related activities
- Must be able to lift 25 lbs (2-person canoe weighs @50#s)
- Must have valid driver’s license and have own means of transportation
- Some travel with some early mornings, late afternoons, evening and weekend work.
Preferred Qualifications:
- 2-3 yrs professional natural resource or non-profit experience
- Virginia Save Our Streams Trainer Certification
- Working knowledge of Virginia agricultural cost-share and BMP programs and Chesapeake Bay Programs
- Experience with GIS and esri products
- Volunteer management experience
- Comfortable leading on-water activities
- Residence in or near GCA watershed
