The Department of Agriculture and Forestry is committed to the sustainable development of the agriculture industry on Prince Edward Island. This position’s role is to provide technical support for Departmental agri-environmental programs and to provide professional advice and engineering services to ensure that soil and water resources are used in a sustainable manner.
- Advise Island producers on soil conservation practices that will maintain or improve soil and water quality;
- Design soil conservation structures to mitigate soil erosion and protect island waterways and public infrastructure;
- Advise Island producers on the implementation of various beneficial management practices that will ensure efficient and effective irrigation of agricultural crops;
- Advise Island producers on water supply options and assist them in the development of the most viable, cost effective and secure water source;
- Working with key industry stakeholders to develop decision-making tools for the more efficient use of water in agriculture irrigation;
- Providing technical assistance or guidance to other government department on topics and issues relating to soil and water conservation and/or management systems;
- Technical advisor to Canada/PEI Agriculture Stewardship Program for Best Management Practices for Water and Soil Management;
- Advise Island producers and landowners in the development and implementation of management plans that will comply with ACRA and reduce negative impacts on the Island soil and water resources,
- Providing professional expertise to other government departments on the development of comprehensive policies relating to water resources and water management in the agriculture industry on PEI;
- Providing engineering expertise to other government departments on policies relating to soil erosion and degradation in the agriculture industry on PEI;
- Providing interpretation of agri-environmental legislation to farmers and farm organisations;
- Provide land management advice to Island landowners in the processing of ALUS applications and encourage them to implement conservation measures and/or retire environmentally sensitive land that is eligible for payment under the program;
- Research on topics to improve Island producers’ soil and water management practices;
- Other duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Position requires an individual with a MSc in Agricultural Engineering with a minimum 2 years’ experience or a BSc in Engineering with a minimum of 5 years’ experience;
- Must have experience and specialization in the areas of water resources engineering, irrigation design & management, hydrology, soil conservation, and other land improvement practices;
- Demonstrated equivalencies will be considered.
- Requires an excellent working knowledge of agricultural production practices relevant to Island agriculture;
- Must have excellent skills in management, communication, conflict resolution, organization and extension practices;
- Must have good computer skills particularly with respect to word processing, spreadsheets and creation of GIS data bases;
- Must be eligible for membership in the Association of Professional Engineers of PEI;
- Must have a valid driver’s license.
Preference will be given to Employees of the Unclassified division as per the UPSE Civil Collective Agreement.

Salary Range: $35.77 – $44.71 per hour (Level 18) ($69,752 – $87,185 annually)
