By joining the Division of Water, Watershed management Branch, Nonpoint Source and Basin Team Section as an Environmental Scientist 1 in Franklin county you will have the opportunity to make a difference in protecting the waters of Kentucky in a fast paces, exciting, and collaborative environment. The Department for Environmental Protection, Division of Water’s mission is to manage, protect and enhance the quality and quantity of the Commonwealth’s water resources for present and future generations through voluntary, regulatory and educational programs.

Holders of the Environmental Scientist 1 position will complete tasks such as:

  • Provide technical assistance to active Watershed Planning projects and partners on the 319(h) grant program.
  • Provide technical assistance to active Watershed Planning projects and partners on nonpoint source pollution best management practices.
  • Provide oversight on project budgeting, invoicing, data management, and required reporting elements for active projects.
  • Assist in the efficient compilation and utilization of Basin Management Unit Data for Basin Assessment, Tracking and Presentations.
  • Assist in creating, evaluating and interpreting scientific Watershed Plans for the Commonwealth in order to manage, improve and protect water resources.

Desired candidates possess the following requisite skills or experience applicable to the position:

  • Strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Self motivated with excellent time management skill.
  • Strong technical writing skills.
  • GIS and ESRI experience.

Additional information: Some travel will be required. Candidates must maintain a current Driver’s License, Frequently communicate in person or by other means of technology, spends a major portion of the time suing a computer, and work overtime or alternate work schedules.

Minimum Requirements

EDUCATION:Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor’s degree in a natural, biological or physical science OR Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor’s degree including or supplemented by 20 semester hours in a natural, biological or physical science.
EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS:NONE
Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE:NONE
Substitute EXPERIENCE for EDUCATION:Experience in natural resources, environmental control, engineering or a related area will substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.):NONE

Working Conditions

Work is typically performed in an office setting. Incumbents in this class may perform work in the field with frequent travel on a statewide basis. An incumbent in this position may be subject to adverse weather conditions, exposure to snakes and insects, water-borne pathogens, broken glass, rusty metal in streams, and hazards common to operation of electro-fishing equipment, which require the following of safety procedures.

Probationary Period

This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
