The Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture is responsible for the development and expansion of opportunities for agriculture and related industries. The Crops and Irrigation Branch is a multi-disciplinary team dedicated to the expansion and sustainability of the crop and irrigation industry through the provision of engineering, agronomic and economic services.
The Crops and Irrigation Branch within the Ministry of Agriculture has a challenging opportunity in our Outlook office as an Irrigation Engineer. Reporting to Manager, Engineering Services, this position is responsible for:
- delivering engineering services for the provincial irrigation program;
- tendering contracts, understanding contract law and the application of specifications, standards, acts, regulations, codes, agreements and procedures;
- effectively managing engineering projects including prioritization of tasks, contracting, and budgeting;
- providing asset management support to irrigation districts, including: inspections, inventory, and replacement analyses of existing infrastructure; and
- updating and maintaining effective infrastructure data management systems.
Our candidate of choice will possess:
- a sound knowledge of engineering design theory combined with an understanding of water resource standards and management;
- ability to work effectively with various clients, stakeholders and staff to achieve mutually beneficial outcomes using superior communication skills; and
- proven ability to effectively manage all facets of a project, including budget, resources and timelines.
Typically, the knowledge, skills and experience required for this position would have been obtained through a Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Agricultural Engineering and be eligible for membership in the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Saskatchewan. Experience with databases and geographic information systems (GIS) would be considered an asset.
