In accordance with the Trust/Research Academic Staff Agreement, this position offers a comprehensive benefits package found on our Benefits Overview page and an annual salary range of $59,822 to $74,785. This position has an approximate appointment of one year with possible extensions.

The Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences offers interdisciplinary approaches to diverse teaching and research themes. One of the largest and best supported departments in Canada, it has an international reputation for leading-edge research.
The EAS Department offers degree programs in Environmental Earth Sciences, Environmental Studies, Geology, Human Geography, Paleontology, and Planning. Position Summary
The candidate will conduct research on oceanographic modeling, particularly in the area around Greenland. The Research Associate is tasked with investigating the dynamics of freshwater and warm water around the Greenland Ice Sheet. Operating within a multidisciplinary framework, this role combines ocean modeling and analysis of existing observational data to enhance the scientific community understanding of critical climate processes in the Arctic region. One key aspect will investigate oceanographic modeling in Baffin Bay, with an emphasis of freshwater in the marine system. Another aspect will investigate oceanographic modeling along the Northeast Coast of Greenland.
Duties
Ocean Model Development
- Work as part of a team to assist with the application of numerical ocean models specific to the Greenland Ice Sheet region and surrounding ocean
- Suggest improvements based on observational data and advancements in ocean modeling
- Ensure models adhere to established scientific standards and methodologies
- Answering questions and assisting in the supervision of undergraduate or graduate students, as appropriate
Observational Data Analysis and Validation
- Calibrate models based on observed oceanographic, glacial, biogeochemistry and climate data
- Interpret findings and contribute to reports and presentations
Collaboration and Teamwork
- Collaborate with oceanographers, glaciologists, biologists, climatologists, and other experts within the organization
- Engage in external collaborations with research institutions and industry partners, as suggested by the project PIs
- Participate in regular team meetings and scientific discussions
- Answering questions and assisting in the supervision of undergraduate or graduate students, as appropriate
Publication and Presentations
- Publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals, following established publication standards
- Present results at conferences and scientific forums
- Engage in public outreach efforts to communicate research outcomes to broader audiences
Minimum Qualifications
- PhD in Physical Oceanography or related discipline
- 1-2 years of postdoctoral research experience
- Strong publication record in peer reviewed scientific journals
- Experience with the NEMO ocean general circulation model
- Excellent communication (oral and written), interpersonal, organizational and time management skills
- Working knowledge of either matlab or python
