 What We Are Looking For:

·        Background in Hydraulic Engineering, Acoustics, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field.

·        Experience in signal processing or machine learning is an advantage.

·        Experience in laboratory or field experiment is an advantage.

·        Proficiency in programming skills (e.g., Python/MATLAB).

·        Meeting English proficiency requirement of the University of Canterbury.

Supervisor: Dr. Derek Li

Dr. Derek Li is a senior lecturer in hydraulic engineering at the Department of Civil and Natural Resources Engineering, University of Canterbury (UC). He earned his Ph.D. in acoustic engineering at the Harbin Engineering University, China. Before joining UC, he served as a postdoctoral research fellow at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, supervised by Professor Ross Murch.

 Dr. Li’s interdisciplinary research interest involves pipeline hydraulics, acoustic signal processing, inverse scattering, and smart water technology. He focuses on applying advanced signal processing and machine learning technology to achieve accurate, efficient, and non-intrusive defect detection in water pipeline systems. In 2022, his research on detecting air entrainment in water pipelines has been awarded the Karl Emil Hilgard Hydraulic Prize, the most prestigious international award in the field of hydraulics. In 2023, Dr. Li was awarded the Royal Society Marsden Fund Fast-start Grant, which incorporates the Internet of Things (IoTs) technologies to achieve smart water supply network.
