The French National Research Institute for Agriculture, Food, and the Environment (INRAE) is a public research establishment under the dual authority of the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Research. It is a community of 12,000 people with more than 200 research units and 42 experimental units located throughout France.

Work environment, missions and activities

Nature and purpose of the research project to be developed and related activities :
The functioning and hydrological regime of alpine hydrosystems decisively structure numerous ecosystems and human activities located along the mountain-plain continuum. They are also particularly sensitive to climate variability and will continue to be significantly affected by climate change, in particular due to modifications suffered by the cryosphere, which plays a central role in the regulation of hydrological regimes (volume, seasonality, temperature). The impacts of the changes in hydrological and thermal regimes, aquatic communities, and uses are still poorly quantified along the mountain-plain continuum. In particular, sensitivity to variations in snow-glacier stocks of baseflows, with major environmental and socio-economic implications, is almost unknown on French territory. In this context, the objectives of the project will be to assess the impact of the evolution of hydrological systems in alpine areas: monthly/yearly accumulation; snow stocks; seasonality; temperature; alternation of snow covering; sediment transport during dry/hot winter periods; flow and storage within the hydrological cycle; characterisation of hydrometereological extremes; characterisation of types of floods in mountain areas. To do this, different analysis and modelling techniques will be combined, particularly hydrological modelling, climate forecasts, and artificial intelligence methods.

Nature and purpose of the teaching project :
The teaching project must fall within the current curriculum (that will only be renewed in 3 years) and developed in coherence with the teaching teams at IGE and more broadly laboratories under the scope of OSUG. The teaching may also be carried out in conjunction with doctoral training courses such as the ERCA European School managed by IGE since 1993.

The candidate will teach primarily with the PhiTEM UFR of the UGA for which the annual number of teaching hours will be 64 tutorial-equivalent hours. Hydrology is at the heart of challenges in geosciences whether in training for research or professional integration. The contributions of the candidate will be particularly appreciated in the field of continental hydrology, hydrology linked to the cryosphere and, depending on their skills, modelling of hydrological systems, experimental aspects, etc.
The teaching will be for the Master’s in “Earth, planets, environmental sciences” (STEP) that aims to acquire expert skills in the study of processes operating at all scales in the Earth, environment system, and especially on two target topics in which the IGE is strongly invested: (i) hydro resources and quality of the environments and (ii) Climate system: atmosphere, hydrosphere, cryosphere. Furthermore, it will also be pertinent that the candidate participates in teaching for the professional degree “Professions in environmental protection and management” – “design and monitoring of hydraulic systems” course for which the teaching needs are considerable as the faculty position has not been filled in this field. The candidate is also expected to participate in teaching responsibilities in the different sectors mentioned above.

The person recruited will have a PhD in hydrology and/or glaciology or a relatedfield with indepedent and convincing experience of several years of research after their PhD.

Type of contract

Tenure-Track Junior Professor Chair enables recruitment of scientists based on a research and teaching project that lasts three years. At the end of this period, and following an assessment of your scientific achievements and professional capabilities, you may obtain a full-tenure position as Research Director (DR2).

A research and teaching agreement will specify the path you will follow towards full-tenure and enable you to acquire the qualifications necessary to become a full-tenure Research Director in your field.
