What can I expect to do in this role?

Your role will be to assist the Surface Water Monitoring Centre (SWMC) with projects and initiatives for flood and drought early warning systems.
Provide support by:

  • Assisting with the analysis and processing of spatial and temporal data to develop required solutions and information products.
  • Participating in team meetings to ensure a clear understanding of the support and development requirements
  • Assisting in the creation and enhancement of spatial and temporal data, including data collection, data conversion, data integration, data improvement, data analysis and the establishment and maintenance of metadata
  • Assisting project leads in methods development and the implementation and adherence of methods; ensures tools and applications are properly integrated with corporate databases.
  • Liaising with project leads to develop tasks lists for project completion.
  • Assisting with the production of reports, maps and related documentation, including participating in the creation of key elements of the formal project management documentation process: scope, risk assessment, quality control, communications and work breakdown structure.
  • Digitizing, scanning, compiling, preparing, processing and updating of data from digital files or hard copy maps to ensure standardized information, common definitions and completeness of data.
  • Assisting in the quality control and maintenance of spatial and tabular base data to ensure data quality and completeness.
  • Reviewing digital mapping data to a variety of other records (hard copy or digital datasets including survey records and imagery) to assess and document the tabular and spatial accuracy and currency of the data.
    Integrating digital mapping data to include partner and other source data to create a common standard dataset.
  • Responding to requests for various types of information products; conducting queries and generating reports to project members, and management.
  • Writing simple scripts for the automation of GIS tasks related to geospatial data management.
  • Generating reports for section and project members and management.

You can expect to apply:

  • Geomatics theory and practice (GIS, Remote Sensing, Mapping & GPS) with emphasis on geospatial referencing systems, spatial data integration, geospatial analysis, statistical sampling techniques, error analysis, map production, accuracy assessment, quality assurance of GIS databases and GIS application development to provide technical expertise in the delivery of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing projects and operations.
  • Current GIS, Remote Sensing and time-series software and related automation techniques, such as programming, scripting and model building to complete advanced analysis in the most efficient and effective way and ensure efficiency and consistency through the automation of processes.
  • Information management principles concerning the quality, use and value of data and information, including the importance of data standards, data exchange and data distribution to create and enhance spatial and temporal data in accordance with these principles.

How do I qualify?

The ideal candidate will demonstrate the following Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Information management principles concerning the quality, use and value of data and information
  • Technical skills in computer systems, geomatics and time-series software as well as scripting and programming languages for conducting intermediate GIS analysis; strong skills in manipulating spatial and temporal data for the purposes of data creation, integration, improvement and analysis or for use in more sophisticated applications of GIS
  • Verbal communication skills to communicate technical issues and solutions to project team leads, clients, stakeholders and management using clear language
  • Writing skills to develop and monitor work plans as well as the preparation of technical procedures and reports
  • Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills to work with management, project leads and colleagues to fully understand project requirements, implement projects and communicate progress on assigned duties.

Eligibility:

  • Proof of eligibility to work in Canada;
  • Has graduated or will graduate from an approved or legally authorized college or university with a degree, postgraduate certificate or diploma within the last four years;
  • Candidates are only eligible to participate in one MNRF 12-month placement and must not have participated in the MNRF internship program in the past.
  • Are not a permanent employee in the OPS.
